What are some ways to develop a good everyday vocabulary?

Read good books. And by good I mean books that weren't written at a 6th grade level and don't have big muscular dudes with flowing hair and exposed chests holding a woman that's swooning in his arms.
Pay attention to the words and if you discover a word you don't understand, look it up in the dictionary.
Once you've done this for a while, there's a pretty cool website out there called "freerice.com". It asks you a series of vocabulary questions and for every answer you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Programme. It's a win-win situation. You improve your vocabulary, and people get food.

Read the dictionary. Sounds silly, but myh best friend moved to the US from China five years ago with no English at all. Everynight she would read a page of the dictionary, and now she has perfect English. I even do it sometimes and English is my first language.

Don't pay attention to the language people use on Yahoo Answers!!!!!
Read a lot of books- whenever you come across a new word, write it down, and look up the definition.

Read books with words you don't fully understand, and look those words up. Try to use them in your own writing. Hang out with smart people you want to impress and be impressed by, Have my mom for a mom.

Reading anything helps a lot. Especially dictionaries.
