Hi, my friend started working out a few months ago and he has noticed that his arm muscles are growing upwards, and have a good height but they are not bulking out to the sides. When I started working out this never happened to me.
My friend doesn't have the internet atm so he asked me to post this question.
He was just wondering whether it could possibly have something to do with how he was working his muscles and if it is, what kind of things can he do to improve it?

exercise only provides the stimulation, genetics determines the shape of a muscle. tendon and ligament attachments points cause variances in muscle in everyone's body. this is why everyone's body is the same, but slightly different when viewed.

Yes and No. Working out a certain way, i.e. heavy weight, low amount of repeitions working the muscle to exhaustion are all tips to bulking up. Toning would be light weight, lots of repitions, more focusing on endurance.

However the No part comes in because of genetics. Whether we are Mesomorphic or Ectomorphic are very important in terms of our bodies. (Please read up on each one) Mesomorphic typically are the stalky body type, Ectomorphic is the thin and lean body type.
