I am getting my wisdom tooth removed tomorrow and am terrified. Apparently there are three types of anaesthetics:

1 - Local anaesthesia (conscience sedation)
2 - Local anaesthesia with Intravenous (IV) sedation
3 - General anaesthesia procedures at a private hospital

I will be getting the first one (conscience sedation). My question is: Since you are conscience, can you feel what is happening during the procedure? the pulling, the cracking, the pressure, the drilling etc. Does anyone have any info on this type of anaesthetic? How do they do it without an IV?

My tooth is already fully mature and broken through the gums. I just don't want to feel anything during the procedure!!!

Thanks in advance.

It doesnt hurt with conscious sedation-you just feel a lot of tugging and pulling-Its more of a pressure feeling-personally, I would get knocked out and woken up after its all over-Locals are novacaine-anytghing that numbs the area-local with IV sedation is numbing up the area and then knocking you out so your not awake--General is unconscious all together-just make sure to get a script for pain med after the procedure is over-Good Luck!

My question is: Since you are conscience, can you feel what is happening during the procedure?

if it's just local, yes and no. you will feel pushing and pulling, but you will not feeling any pain. the local anesthetic will take care of the pain, but you will feel the surgeon tugging on your body.

you can hear the tooth cracking and maybe even the bone, but, again, no pain.

many times the drill is not used, esp if your molars have erupted into the mouth.

Does anyone have any info on this type of anesthetic?

more than likely you will get 2%lidocaine with some epinephrine. it's 'novacaine'. it stops the sensation of pain to your brain. you may get a valium, before you actually sit in the chair which doesn't no anything for pain, but it'll make the procedure more tolerable for you, esp if you're anxious.

they may change the anesthetic if your taking particular medications or have heart problems (eg hypertension)

How do they do it without an IV?

they administer the local anesthetic just like any other dental procedure with a needle. you'll get some topical anesthetic that'll help a bit, but after the needle, you won't feel any pain.

the procedure should take less than 30 minutes, so relax, bring your IPOD, ask the surgeon many questions, and don't worry. you'll have some stitches placed, some pain killers. get some ice packs, salt water, and soft foods for the next couple of days.

I would go with the local IV. They may give you an opportunity to change your mind when you get there. They did with me and I am very glad I did. I didn't remember anything or feel a thing. Which is what I wanted.
The conscience sedation is what a friend of mine had and she said she felt a lot of pressure but not really any pain. She also said that they gave her headphones so she couldn't hear any of the drilling. You won't be in pain during the procedure but will probably be sore for a few days afterwards.
Good luck!

A little info I think should be considered about this drug Versed ( Midazolam ) that is used for Sedation for many medical procedures..Sedation and General Anesthesia are not the same and quite a few people being given Sedation
think they are being given General Anesthesia!

There is simply no good or valid reason to ever purposely induce amnesia during a medical procedure. It is only a recent development in medical thinking that amnesia is somehow a "benefit" to the patient. On occasion some
some patients will remember a bad experience. Forgetting does not mean it did not happen!!
I feel that if people were aware of the effects of this drug they would Opt For Another Drug!
Erasing someones memory of what was done to them is wrong!!
In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" Twilight Sedation, during a procedure are Awake For The Entire Procedure but remember nothing, often Believing They Were "Out" the whole time.

Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like setting broken bones, colonoscopies, endoscopies, dental procedures like extractions, conscious sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!

Here is a note from a Dentist Who uses Versed
I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints they have no memory of the procedure.....

I feel that giving a drug for amnesia is cruel I would not want it done to me!

A strange development in medical thinking that it's okay for a patient to have
pain as long as they don't remember it and think they slept thru the procedure..

I've had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I had conscious sedation for all. With the bottom 2 wisdoms, I had Novocaine (the doc will stick a needle into your gums to numb the area; it just feels like a pinch like when you get blood taken) and I also had the laughing gas (don't know the proper name of the medication). They'll give you the laughing gas through a mask that they'll put over your nose. Either way, you won't feel anything. With the laughing gas, it'll seem like you're asleep but you're fully awake. You may even dream. You may feel the doc pulling to get the tooth out, but you shouldn't feel any pain. The only pain you should feel is after the fact, your face will be swollen (my sister told me it looked like I was storing nuts for the winter!) But you'll be fine, I was terrified too. Just make sure that you tell the doc if you feel any pain during the procedure, that means he will have to give you more meds.

Conscious Sedation Wisdom Teeth

I had mine pulled about a month ago. I had the local, they numbed the area around my tooth and then I had like 4 shots of the anaesthesia. I did not feel any pain only the pulling and heard the cracking that everyone else mentions. The worse part for me was the needles, the first 3 went in ok, didn't feel a thing, but the last one I felt (ohh boy). For the first couple of hours, my jaw felt really swollen and numb, but after that I was fine, like I didn't even have anything done. Just be sure to follow the dentist's instruction after the procedure, (no drinking thru a straw, only soft foods, etc.. you don't want the clot breaking loose, then you'll just start bleeding again.

I just had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled today. I was scared of the anaesthesia since it would be my first time with it, but it went great! I had the conscience sedation, like you'll be having, and within a few minutes I was asleep. The procedure seemed to just fly by!

I could hear voices, but I didn't hear any drilling or feel any pressure. They freeze your mouth enough so you can't feel a thing. Just make sure to swallow afterwards or you'll be drooling all over yourself! LOL

After you wake up, you'll start shaking for a bit in order for the anaesthesia to wear off and you'll be peeing like crazy.

Good luck, you'll be fine!

Everything you described you will feel. It's very scary, you hear a lot of cracking, drilling, and feel a lot of pressure/pulling, but it doesn't hurt, there isn't any pain. I was going to have IV sedation but they couldn't find a big enough vein, so they just used novacaine on me and it was terrifying, but since yours are all through the gums it won't be that bad. Mine were all still under the gum so I think it was worse for me. Don't worry though, no pain!! They'll give you some laughing gas and it'll help you relax. It'll be over before you know it, it's really quick, probably like 15 minutes. Just make sure you follow directions after so you don't get dry socket -- that's the worst!! Good luck!

I had a wisdom tooth removed using conscience sedation.
The only thing you'll feel during the removal is pressure - as if he/she is pushing on the tooth. You won't feel any pain during it. He didn't use a drill for me.

They administer the anesthetic into your gum by the tooth. If the dentist is good, you won't feel the needle. Otherwise it will hurt a bit.

Good luck. You'll be fine. :)

I have to get two more pulled soon. Eep.
