When a Mason greets you with "Hello my friend.", he means "Hello my friend." It is not a Masonic greeting. He is probably just a very friendly guy.

Well it depends on if it is a mason from the masonic lodge or a brick laying mason........I would think that he is just a friendly person either way but it might have something to do with the masonic code if it is a masonic brother.

This all sounds a bit 1970's and sad. What are the masons doing in defence of their 'brethrens' brick laying jobs?
m.m.m. standing up for all then?

Its not a Craft greeting so he is probably just considering you his friend...
to some other responses:
* there is nothing selfish about freemasonry, it is about service and charity --- $2 billion USD per year is hardly token, no other group provides that much. also, there are no secrets in masonry, you can read everything online - phoenixmasonry.org, bessel.org, masonicinfo.com, ugle.org.uk

Apart from "hello my friend"? I can't think of anything, but I've only been to a few meetings, low-level ones.

Don't join the Masons mate. A bunch of blokes formed just for the selfish benefit of themselves who make themselves feel a little better (if they have a conscience about it) with a bit of token charity). A outdated boys club from a patriarchal, elitist society. Forgive me if I'm completely ignorant, this is just my impression of a society who don't want me to know about them. Why the secrecy?

No idea what your friend means with his greeting. I can assure you it is not a craft greeting.

If you are not a mason, you will never know. It is a secret society. My husband belongs and believe me, I know nothing and he's not allowed to answer any of my questions about anything. If you are a mason, you wouldn't be asking the question nor would you know their salutations or other member presentations. This is not a viable question.
