I have Windows XP on my computer, the cd-rom is NEC ND4570a, I tried different disks - with games, even an antivirus made the computer restart. Sometimes it reads the disks-sometimes restarts. I'm trying to find out if the cd-rom is broken or it is caused by the driver or something else. Tried to updat the firmware - didn't help. tried to find an update to the driver, but I can't find anything exept the fact that it is provided by microsoft and there are no updates. Does anybody know what is causing the problem? I had another cd-rom before and it was reading all disks perfectly well.

Don't do system restore, it sounds like you have faulty hardware. If you are brave enough switch off the PC an remove the lid, ensure that all the connectors to the CD-Rom are secure and it is screwed in nice and tight.

Before you touch anything inside turn off and touch the casing this will discharge any Static Electricity which can harm your PC
