Jill weighs 160 pounds but is now on a weight reduction plan to loose an extra average of 1.5 lb per week.

Her brother weighs 108 pounds but is on a weight gain plan to gain an average of 2.5 pounds per week.

if the number of weeks is x

at the end of x weeks Jill weighs 160 - 1.5x

Her brother weighs 108 + 2.5x

160 - 1.5x = 108 + 2.5x

52 = 4x

x = 13 weeks

160lbs-1.5lbsx=108bs+2.5lbsx-starting equation. You must set the equations equal to solve with x=to # of weeks til they weigh the same. then solve to get x alone.
160lbs-1.5lbsx=108bs+2.5lbsx
+1.5lbsx +1.5lbsx
_______________
160lbs=108lbs+4lbsx
-108lbs -108lbs
_______________
52lbs=4lbsx
divide both sides by 4
_______________
13=x=# of weeks til they weigh the same
