The only main differences between the 40GB and 80GB PS3 is that the 40GB PS3 is not backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. Also, the 40GB PS3 has only 2 USB ports and the 80GB PS3 has 4 USB slots. Everything else between the 2 consoles is the same.

And yes, HDMI cables are required in order to display a game in 1080p and the cables do not come with the system, only composite cables come with the system. And just to add one more thing, an HDTV is not required for the PS3.

1). 40GB doesn't play PS2 games (only PS1 games can be played);
2). 40GB has 2 USBs instead 4;
3). 40GB has no slots for memory cards;
4). 40GB has no chrome trim (also Asia has white version of 40GB);
5). 40GB has a different cooling system (quieter).

Regarding 1080p - yes, you'll need to buy HDMI cable.
