I have just recently obtained my GED. I have heard many different things from people stating that I cannot go into the military without a HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. And that I CAN be accepted into the Marines with just a GED but its rare... Can anyone with experience clarify this for me please? :] I've also heard that Marines don't get sign on bonuses quite as much as other branches.... Not that important but would like to know a bit about that?

very few slots in the Marines for GED holders. only a certain number every year, and it is very possible they may have already been filled for the year.

BTW: the year runs October to October.

very few bonuses are offered to Marines, and none to GED holders. your choice of job is also limited as a GED holder.

the Army takes the largest number fo GED holders per year, and while the job choices are limited you do have a small chance at a bonus.

The Air Force is the most strict on this matter. The Air Force allows less than one percent of annual enlistments to be recruits without a high school diploma. The Marines have the next highest standards. No more than five percent of Marine recruits can be GED-holders. The Army allows no more than ten percent each year, and the Navy limits GED enlistments to no more than five to ten percent each year.

Its not easy, but it can be done. I got in on a GED, but mine was because I was homeschooled. They do not make an exception though. If you are in a pinch and want in immediately, then you can try and the worst they can tell you is there are no GED spaces available. Get the recruiter to let you take the ASVAB. Once you smoke that, it will give you some leverage on getting in sooner. They will likely tell you to get some college under your belt first. Simply get one year of Gen.Eds at a local community college and that will be enough to side-step the GED issue, plus the college credit could get you a meritorious promotion to PFC once you graduate bootcamp.

You may also have to have a higher Asvab score just for enlistment. To join the Air Force with a GED you need a 65, with a HS diploma you only need a 36.

Yes you can. As far as any sign on bonus, talk to a recruiter.
