I recommended it on a previous question and got several thumbs down.
Not looking for an argument just wondering, I shot rabbits all the time with mine I think they work great

I'm not offended by other peoples opinion (hell i got my own), I'm just giving a forum to people to explain why they think it's not a great choice of rifle

i think people use the thumbs down too much. seems to me it is used if they dont agree with your opinion not that it is wrong just they think theirs is better. im with you on the 17 it would work great for rabbits,,,, i also only use a thumbs down in the case of insulting and wrong as well as potentialy dangerous answers

Not knowing what question you are reffering to i wouldn't be able to give an educated guess why you got thumbs down. I personally never give thumbs down unless the answer is just plain wrong, or insulting etc.Never for a difference in opinion.
Now to your question!
The 17HMR is a great rabbit rifle, with the right ammo. It's got plenty of energy to drop a rabbit, and it won't destroy the meat like a shotgun will. I've used rimfires for a lot of small game, to include the 17HMR, 22 mag, 22lr and 17Mach2.
Don't let the thumbs downers get to you,some people get a boost of self exteem by putting others down, Sad aint it.

I dont know bout a .17HMR blowin up a rabbit, but it is a exellent round for head shots on any small game at even long range, I like to use it on crows that ya jus cant reach with your bare hands. muhahaha

Most likely it is because it is a very high velocity cartridge and can tear up more meat than a .22. As long as you head shoot them or shoot them in the heart, there is not much meat loss but if you hit them in one of the meaty parts, it will mess up more meat than a .22. That's my opinion for what its worth.

was designed for.
Maybe you were dealing with folks who just
can't stand the thought of shooting 'those
cute little fuzzy bunnies`.

That large bullet at modest velocity bucks brush so well, I can't imagine why anybody would object.
Seriously, though, if you're hunting for fun it's a fine cartridge. If you need the meat, you'd best carry a shotgun. Fortunately, most of us these days fall into the first category.

People don't like small bullets. they rather see a Barret L50 than a 17HMR kill a rabbit. To you if it works great then you ansowred your own question.
