The PS2 is probably your best bet. It features the largest library of games at the cheapest price. The only downsides are that the graphics are no where near the quality of the PS3 or Xbox 360, the PS2 does not do HD (in fact, the games may look worse on a HDTV compared to a normal TV), there really are no more games planned for the PS2, other than a few sports and multi-platform movie titles (e.g. Ratatoiulle, Simpsons Movie game) and finding titles will become harder and harder as time goes on.
That said, the PS2 has a large library of very good games, and a wide variety of titles - many of which are very cheap now.
You may have heard that the PS3 is compatible with PS2 titles, which might make it a good choice, but the PS3 has its own problems. Depending on which PS3 you get, it may or may not be compatible with certain PS2 games - heck the newest model isn't compatible with ANY PS2 games whatsoever. The PS3's own library leaves a bit to be desired as well. Many of its titles are also available on the cheaper Xbox 360, sometimes with better online play, or better gameplay. The PS3 really needs more exclusive titles. Right now its best exclusive game is Ratchet & Clank.
The PS3 also features a blu-ray player, meaning it can play blu-ray movies in glorious HD...assuming you have a HDTV that is. However, I really don't consider HD movies to be a solid reason why you're looking at a game console. Besides which, the HD movie market is still too chaotic with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray bickering between them while expecting consumers to choose which studios' movies they want to watch. It's a mess.
The 360 is probably what I'd pick as the #2 choice. Its games are in HD, but also look very good on a regular TV. Its library is the strongest of the 3 current generation consoles, with Halo3 leading the way. It also comes in a few different configurations, which is a little confusing, but gives you a little control over price. The 360 has suffered from a manufacturing problem that causes it to overheat, giving users the dreaded 'red ring of death' (RROD). While Microsoft has extended the warranty on ALL 360s to a full 3 years, and has made numerous improvements to the 360 itself, it is unknown whether the RROD problem has been completely solved or not.
In the end, which console to buy really comes down to one question: What games do you like? After all, games are the only reason you're buying a game console, right?
If you like RPGs, platformer type games, and just trying different stuff, you'll probably be happiest with a PS2.
If you like first person shooters with lots of action and explosions, AND have a HDTV, you'll probably be happiest with a 360.
The PS3 has yet to live up to its potential. IF Sony can get off their rear and help developers get those games out there, the PS3 can still be a solid performer this year. A lot of the PS3's biggest titles are still yet to be released - Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, etc. are all planned to come out in the next 6-12 months. Buying a game console in anticipation of games is generally a BAD idea. If you really want a PS3, but don't see enough titles to play right now, don't buy one with the assumption that more titles will show up. The last thing you want your game console to do is sit there collecting dust due to a lack of games.

Well your of course going to make the decision by yourself but I will give you my opinion of what I think of the XBOX360!
I believe that is one of the best choices here, and we have one. At first I didn't play it at all but I have found that alot of the games are interesting and fun, the arcade is great, and the XBOX live is awesome. You can play games with people around the globe, which is great for making new friends. The hard drive depending on the model is extremely large, and most popular now days in the special edition HALO 3 system and game. But trust me, it's not all that games hyped up to be, HALO 2 is just as good. It's a great pick and Microsoft, backs all it's products and helps with any problems and/or concerns to make for great game play.
But I will tell you, we have thought about also purchasing a Wii, it's seems like a great system, with action and motion bound gaming. To get the gamer up of the dent in the couch. If you have any other things you want to look for in a system, you should try.

or do another search on the game systems you are considering, GOOD LUCK
Hope that helped.

get a ps3 if you're a gamer who likes action adventure and japanese made games the most
get an xbox 360 if you prefer shooters sports games and western made games
don't get a ps2 anymore cuz they won't make new games for it
i own a ps3 and an xbox 360 my ps3 never had any problems but my xbox 360.... im not saying it has glitches.... maybe im just unlucky but i had to send it back 2 times before i got a decent working one....
dont always believe the people in forums they're usually really biased.... go with the gaming system that 1st caught your attention cuz its usually the one you really want....

you are better off with a ps3 because....
- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player
-ps3 supports 1.3 HDMI which has rich colors and xbox supports 1.2 HDMI
- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)
- because of the blu-ray's huge space, ps3 will have WAY better graphics than 360
- online is free for ps3 not like 360
- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring
- you can browse the internet on ps3, no such thing for xbox 360
- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it
- developers stated that they will start using ps3 as the lead platform and port ps3 games to xbox
- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)
- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p
- built in Wi-Fi
- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure
ps3: .2% hardware failure(see the decimal? less than 1%!)
- ps3 has better back-comp except the 40gb
- rumble returns in spring 2008
- you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD
(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)
those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this
Now I want you to do me a favor, list all the reasons why xbox is better than ps3. I PROMISE you that nobody will get at least 5 reasons
Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $499 with motorstorm
40gb: $399 with spiderman 3 blu-ray
xbox 360(premium)- $349
(elite)- $449
if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars, so that means ps3 is actually cheaper

PS2 is a great choice, but if you want a next gen then for sure go with PS3. I don't think they make games for xbox anymore, so thats out. But PS2, is cheap, fun, games are still coming so thats good, but if you wanna be set for the future, and play in HD, go with PS3

THe ps3 has had virtually no glitches infact thousands and thousands ofps3 owners are running their ps3 24 hours a day for the last 7 months running a program called folding at home which is a huge collective of super computers joining together to find a cure for cancer.
PS3 games produced are on Hd 50gig blueray (more space for better graphics without sacrificing game levels and game size..) GTA4 developers even stated that the game will have better graphics and gaming on the ps3 version and are having issues with the 360 version because of 8gig dvd game format... They may have to make the 360 version on multiple disc so if you like getting out of your chair alot while playing, .....
360-elite games produced on dual layered 8gig dvds
game developers are finding the 360 format to limiting and finding that they have to sacrifice game graphics or gaming levels and challenges...Bungie the makers of HALO series have parted the exclusive ways with Microsoft and are now developing games that are multiplatform...
Ps3 499 and xbox 360 399or elite for $479---THe Ps3 for the extra $20 you get a full HD entertainment system that also surfs the internet. You can goto any website and watch or download videos like YouTube...You can access your email and print it etcc...
Ps3 Blueray hd movie player that also upscales regular dvds movies to HD...It also upscales ps2 games to hd..
Ps3 comes with rechargeable controllers...
Ps3 comes with free online play and Wifi
All of the above the 360-elite can't do.
360 and elite -For hd movies you have to buy the hddvd player for $200. For
360 elite for quick charge kit you have to buy it for $20.
To play online the 360 charges $50 a year
360 elite no interent browser
Ps3 hdmi 1.3 (supports deep color)
360-elite- 1.2 doesn't support deepcolor 1.3
Ps3 Nvidia RSX GPU Graphics at least two years ahead of it's time. And programmers aren't even close to using it's full potential yet.
360-elite is hardware locked into outdated DX9 graphics-Game programmers are developoing for DX10 (full 4d and 3d motion realism)
THe ps3 8cell broadband processors. CPU-Designed specifically for highspeed calculations (Games Capable of more AI charactors )
Xbox 360 -Elite-- The New 65NM CHip....Isn't any different then what they used in the 360 core except it cost less to produce....
Ps3 you can buy any external usb harddrive and hook it up loaded with music videos , etc...You can buy any brand 2.5 ata harddrive and upgrade the harddrive size for ps3...
THe elite and 360 requires Microsoft harddrives only- for a 20gig it's $100, for the 120 it's $189
360 -elite for wifi you have to pay an additional $100 and online gaming is $50 a year...And for that $50 a year to play online you also get stuck with third party in menu advertising...
To use 60% of what the 360 and elite can do you have to buy the addons and you'll spend over $750 before you even insert a game.
THe elite and new 360s hdmi, 65nm, red ring of death--Microsoft has no Idea what the cause is, You can't fix what you can't find. Game producer are even finding that the engines that Micorsofts provides them to develope games on are getting the Red ring of death and it is not caused by just the hardware engineering flaws. They are seriously frustrated and that is one reason Bungie the maker of the Halo series has left their exclusive contract with microsoft and is now developing games for other systems. Microsoft still owns Halo though. So yes all the 360s even the new ones are all vulnerable.
THe 360 sales numbers are game producer driven by three titles HALO, bioshock ( rumored to be multiplatform soon and availble to the pc now) and Gears of war (available to the PC now)...If it wasn't for those titles many gamers wouldn't tolerate the limitations and engineering flaws of the 360
Get the ps3 you can use it for so much more. We own all three. THe wii, elite and ps3... The ps3 will take you into the next two generations of game consoles... The 360 will have to be re deigned or another generation produced by 2009

This is my cut and paste answer. The reason for that is because a tech info is a tech info, you can't beat it (sources below).
PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.
Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:
A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%. Despite some people say, that new 360 has no breakdown issues - just visit Xbox section of Yahoo answers and see for yourself an amount of complaints.
PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. RSX runs on 550 Mhz. It's difficult to compare their graphics chips, because 360 has a video chip with totally different structure and operating memory is divided differently in both consoles. However, PS3 exclusives look better than 360's exclusives.
PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 15 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......
PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).
On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.
PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. There is a cheaper 40GB version of PS3.
Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.
PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 controller is getting rumble controller (Dualshock 3) in 1st quarter 2008, Japan gets it in this November.
On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.
New 40GB is 399$ or 399 euro (depends on the region) - it has no backwards compatibility with PS2 games, has 2 USBs instead of 4, no built-in card reader, but it's the same PS3, strong, reliable, less noisy, different cooling system. The price is friendly.
I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.
