I would like to know how much of a difference there is between the 40GB, the 60GB, and the 80GB consoles. I want to purchase one for my younger brother and aside from watching movies and playing games (but he has no online playing interest) what's the big difference that will make me choose one over the other.

I assume you're US-based. (the 60GB is slightly different in europe)
The major difference is b/wards compatibility.
60GB will play all PS2 and PS1 games.
80GB will play most PS2 and PS1 games.
40GB will only play PS1 games but no PS2 games.
The only other differences are in the hard drive size (but even 40GB is more than enough.) and the 40GB model has some cutbacks in flash memory card slots and 2 less USB ports (neither any great loss when it comes to watching movies and playing games.)

THe 80 gig is backward capable of playing most ps2 and ps1 games . THe 80gig has an sd memory card reader, a Memorystick card reader(slot), and compact flash reader(slot). THe 80gig has 4 usb ports. All of the above come in handy.

THe 40 gig has only 2 usb ports and doesn't play ps2 games at all. THe 40 gig has no memory card, sd, or compact flash card slots.

THey all have wifi, they all have hdmi, they all have hd blueray (games are on blueray discs).

THey all have free online play. and they all are great but if he can get the 60 gig US version he should get that. It is hardware backward capable and it plays all 2400 ps2 games and most ps1 games. It has all the other features including the features of the 80gig.
