Is the number of word students learn in a semester closer to 100, 200, or 400 words?

That's a good question. I work as a Spanish tutor at a college, and I suppose that it varies from student to student. When students are learning a foreign language, though, they're not only learning words. They're also learning grammar. I could be wrong, but I would imagine that the majority of the students only remember certain words and grammatical rules long enough to pass tests. I don't know if that could actually be considered learning, though, since chances are, most of them probably won't retain the information after the semester passes.

EDIT: I could be wrong, but I don't think that most students really learn anywhere near 100 words in a semester. Of course, there are exceptions.

Well it depends. Grew up speaking spanish, so I can't speak exactly from experience, but first year students have to be like sponges. You easily learn between 400-500 new vocabulary words. My high school english and french class was similar, as was my chinese class in the university. Now in Arabic first semester ( we took forever learning sounds and writing and are only 2 mos. in, one to go) and I've already got over 300 notecards of words we're required to know and get tested on. As you keep progressing I'm sure it drops as you learn to hone your abilities rather than keep making huge jumps...
