Hello Siobhan,
As the above answers tell you, it is not easy to learn a language quickly, but if you really are keen you can pick up the basics fairly speedily and survive. It depends entirely on what you need it for, and how you study it. If you know someone fluent who is prepared to help you, test you and correct you and if you learn essential vocabulary and verbs on a daily basis so as to increase your knowledge, you can pick up enough to get by in three months, but it does involve a lot of effort and perseverance. The easiest language to pick up is Spanish (I should not say this as I am a French language specialist), but French has a variety and a charm that is unique. To see what you could do, why don't you look on the following website and have a try on the beginners' programmes:

Good luck!

There's no superquick way of learning a foreign language. If you want to REALLY learn to communicate in a foreign language, you have to take the time to study the vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation rules. You have to acquire good speaking, writing, and listening skills. These things take time. If you're unable to enroll in a class, I suggest that you try foreign language CDs, DVDs, software, and books. Learning languages is a lot of fun, so don't be afraid to dive in there!:)

Rosetta Stone is supposed to be a really good program and you can do it at home. They have all sorts of languages.
I haben't tried it myself, but it might be worth a look.
