The best career path if you don't go to college is an apprenticeship program (the plumber answer would be one example). You do on-the-job training for a position, starting at the bottom, and take classes on Saturday (usually) to learn more aspects about the job, such as making calculations and preparing reports.
Contact your local department of labor (probably at the state level) to find out more about apprenticeship programs. There are almost 1,000 different kinds of jobs you can do through the apprenticeship program! Some examples are electrician, plumber, carpenter, painter, mechanic, etc.
Salaries are pretty good to start, and once you go through the 5-6 years, you make very good money. My brother is a journeyworker welder (that means he's past apprenticeship) and he earns about $80,000 a year.

In most places you don't need a college education to be a police officer or real estate agent.
