You know that the Gunpowder Plot was a scam, right?

The "consipirators" were set up by the government agents that "discovered the plot" at a time of great political conniving, which dragged religion into the mix. The rights of Catholics to freely practice their faith were denied by the government. Remember THAT the next time you bemoan the state of government and society in the US.

No, but I think we should celebrate 5th of November as our national day, not because of its religious connotations, but because it demonstrates the triumph of democracy over terrorism. What could be more appropriate to our modern world situation?

The terrorists who are more likely to try and blow up the government come from different religious traditions at present, but their aim is the same: to impose their beliefs on the rest of us through violence.
