I have a 2 year old German Shepherd/Husky mix dog. She is so wild, I give her attention, I play with her and still she fails to listen to me. She drags me everywhere when we walk. She's so active and hyper. She likes to jump on you and run around. Will spaying her calm her down a bit? Does anyone have any other suggestions for her naughty behavior? Thanks.

First of all, realize that large dogs generally take about 3 years to settle down. They may act like puppies for that long! Spaying generally does not calm females in the way neutering helps males. What she needs most of all (besides spaying) is obedience training. This will teach her to walk by your side instead of dragging you everywhere, teach her to listen and obey commands. There are times that you need her to obey you instantly, such as when she runs into the street and could get hit by a car. This will also teach her not to jump on you and others. Obedience training seems to have a negative connotation in this country but it is the kindest thing you could do for her besides having her spayed (so she doesn't have unwanted litters). Find a program that uses positive reinforcement as a training tool and you will notice a difference in her behavior within a week or two if you practice those skills with her between classes. Positive reinforcement uses treats as rewards for doing the requested command and it works very quickly!! You will notice a huge difference also in the way you interact with each other-for the better. She needs to know who is boss but in a positive way. If you call your vet or local humane society they should be able to tell you where there is a program, when it starts and how much it costs. It is worth it at any cost and I have used our local group quite a few times to train foster dogs and my own dogs. It socializes your dog also and gives her a purpose. Remember too, that large dogs need lots of exercise at LEAST twice daily to burn off all that energy. This dog will be with you for a lot of years so it is worth your time to train this dog now so you can have a great relationship for years to come. Please spay her also-not only does it prevent unwanted litters but will protect her from certain reproductive cancers for the rest of her life. Good luck and keep me posted!

Spaying is always a good idea. It may calm her down and then again, it might not, no guarantees. But, it's a great idea, anyway.

I believe that you and your pup should go to an obedience training class. They will train you how to train your dog to respect and obey you. And how to do it in a positive way.

Jumping around, being active and hyper isn't really naughty behavior, it's just a dog being a dog. The obedience class will teach you how to redirect all her energy and become a great dog that won't take you for a ride...

Nope, spaying will not cure this. The only cure is a vigorous exercise program. Most dogs need at least 1 hour of activity a day. And not just playing in the backyard. A hike, biking, playing fetch, etc. Also a good obedience class would be good, will teach both you and the dog boundaries and proper behavior while helping you bond. She should calm down in a year or two.

Find a good obedience class and learn how to properly train her. She doesn't listen to you because you haven't trained her yet. She likely isn't 'hyper' at all as in over 50 years of dog training and instructing classes, I have yet to find an untrainable dog or a really 'hyper' one - the ones identified that way were simply untrained. It isn't 'naughty behavior' - again, untrained. 90% of dog training is actually training the owner to do it properly so the dog isn't confused, given mixed messages and isn't being told to do something they have no real idea to do or not, and many times the activities the owners don't like are ones that the owner inadvertantly did train the dog to do... It isn't difficult but it is different so please find a good (not petsmart or petco or whatever but a real training class) training class and learn to train the dog. Good luck!!

Yes, it will calm her down, but it won't change her personality overnight. It sounds as if she is very energetic and needs to have some of that energy run off. Do you have a treadmill, or access to one? Once they learn to walk/run on one it is a great tool to help them get focused and spend that energy. Huskies by nature are very active and GSD's are working dogs that need a job to do. When I was training my boxer pup to walk calmly etc, I got a doggie back pack and put a 16oz bottle of water in each side. It helped wonders to have her walk beside me and made her work harder, spending some of her energy and making her more receptive to accepting training. If a dog is hyper, it will not take your direction well. Remember what Cesar always says, exercise, discipline and affection. I would start off with the spay and after she re cooperates from that, seek out some assistance in training methods and by all means, exercise her more! Best of luck to you.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/tHhdO

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

She doesn't know what the rules are.

Put her on a leash and put her in a sit position. You start the walk when she is calm and sitting. Start to walk, if she goes nuts, stop and put her in a sit position. Every time she get nuts, stop and sit her. She should never walk ahead of you. She interprets that as you are allowing her to be the alpha dog. Go ahead of her always. Reverse directions with her when she misbehaves. Don't pull back on the lease, pull up. And as soon as she starts to waver get her attention by pulling up on the leash.
You are the alpha ...she just doesn't know that yet. Take her on long walks and tire her out and that too will help to calm her down. check web site www.cesamillan.com

Spay her is you do not intend to breed her and she will live a happier, healthier life. Help to protect against breast cancer.
and she will not be coming into season 2 or 3 times a year.

good luck

Spaying may calm her some but dont count on her.

you are an owner of a "working" dog. They are bred to work. These breeds get board very easily. Try taking her to obedience classes or go to agility classes. Play catch with her. Teach her tricks. BE PATIENT!! She isnt being naughty on purpose. She is just trying to entertain herself.

Spaying often does help calm a dog and is much healthier for her. It might be good to attend obedience classes too to help with her behavior and strengthen your relationship and establish you as the leader.
