She loves to play with the ball but she will never let go of the ball. I don't want her to teach her to be rough so I don't pull the ball away from her. She sometimes drops it but then when you get your hand close she grabs it again. Any suggestions??

simple one here.

have super yummy special treats in your hand,, throw ball. when she gets it.. say come and when she gets to you say SIT...... then you will say "give" and offer her the treat.. praise..

if that doesn't work,, when she comes to you with the ball, pinch her cheek onto her own tooth and say "out" she will drop the ball..

your dog will be trained in less than 15 minutes using either of the above approaches

She is playing a game with you. Pick a word that means drop it. leave it, give, ....whatever you like. And use that word when you want her to let you have whatever is in her mouth. You can try a small reward of a meat bit, or another toy. Work with her until she gets the picture. When she doesn't want to participate, stop the game and stand up and turn your back and cross your arms.. Let her know if she doesn't play correctly, the play will stop. She will learn that the fun comes when she does it correctly.

One of our dogs loves to play ball and Frisbee and I watched him trying to teach our old dog how to play. It was so funny. He would kick the ball to Boo and wait for Boo to kick it back...he would do the play bow and wait again. Finally he went over got the ball took it a few feet away and kicked it again and waited for the return kick. After several tries Boo, just walked back to the house and ignored him. It was so funny to watch.

easy,
get some treats, soft and chewy,
when she comes back with the ball let her smell the treat, as soon as she starts to let go of the ball tell her drop it, when she completely drops the ball tell her good girl and give her the treat

teaching leave it

have 2 treats, hold your dog and put one treat on the floor, tell her leave it, after a few seconds give her the other treat (the one in your hand and tell her GOOD GIRL!) pick up the one from the floor, don't let her get that one. slowly increase the time you have her wait. after she gets really good at that, stop holding her and keep increasing the time. pretty soon you should be able to walk away from her (with the treat lying on the floor) and come back and have her not touch it

You're right not to play that tug of war game with the ball. I eventually taught my Boston Terrier "drop it", by ignoring him until he released it. Then he has to sit before I'll throw it again; it's an automatic thing with him now.....been doing it for 6 years....lol.
Just be patient.

teach her to release the ball by offering her a trade - either an irresistible treat or another toy. then teach leave it, by offering a reward for leaving it. see link for more on teaching leave it.
