I assume Wal-Mart or any local gun shop.
Joe: Weird? Is it weird that people kill what they eat? Or is it weird that people eat processed foods that are loaded with crap we dont need and cannot digest?

We have bought a dozen youth size shotguns for our Hunter Safety classes. Rossi, NEF, Savage (Stevens) and used ones from the 50's and 60's. The Rossi has extras that make it more useful. It comes in a zipper canvas case and has a .22LR barrel and a 20 ga. shotgun bbl. Changing between the two takes more time to tell it than do it. No tools needed. Well made and no problems with them after 4 yrs of shooting and that is probably about 1000 rounds has gone through them. The NEF also were reliable but lacked the extras and had a little more drop in the stock that caused the gun to recoil harder and was uncomfortable for the smaller kids to shoot. They were priced at approx.what you have in mind.

I would agree with some of the others here. New England Firearms. Or NEF. It's a good quality gun for a very reasonable price. I have friends that have much more expensive guns but they always take the NEF with them. NEF makes some nice single shot rifles as well. Very accurate. But I wouldn't buy a used gun from a pawn shop. The NEF are not expensive and they can be found in a lot of stores. Just do a Internet search for New England Firearms and the website should tell you where to find the guns.

For pheasants, deer and coyotes, a 12 ga would probably be a better choice. When my oldest son was 10, I got a Winchester Youth Ranger in 12 ga for him. He primarily wanted to hunt turkey and ducks. It was the only 12 ga with a youth stock. It worked out real well for him. Sadly they no longer make them. There was a Mossberg Bantam, which I assume is still available. It should be towards the top end of your price range. Remington makes a 870 youth in 20 ga which should be towards the top end of your price range also. For a little over $100 you can get a H&R single shot shotgun. I got a 20 ga youth for my wife.

new England arms makes a single shot in 20 gauge that sells new for under $100.00 I look for them on sale for around $85.00 the nice thing is, you can change the barrels to other shotgun gauges or Even rifle calibers. I have taken them in the past, cut the barrel down to 18 1/2 inches, installed a new front bead or sight pin and used them as a "survival" weapon that I leave in my truck. They come apart easily into two main pieces plus the fore end, then I stick a box of #7 1/2 bird shot and 1 box of slugs in the case with em, slip a "shell holder" on the butt stock with 3 shot shells and 2 slug shell in it and I'm ready to go on birds and small game in the pot or deer etc in the freezer.
Good luck and shoot safe

Check out these Remington single shot imports. The suggested manufacturer retail price is between $115 and $125 brand new. I have been to gun shows and I can tell you that the price is about the same as in a gun store and a used
pump thats any good will not go for what you want to spend. Also, check out the mossberg imports also. Go to their website. good luck.

You might try checking pawn shops or even e-bay. Just be sure to research very well. A lot of times you can find really great deals on guns. Plus, I assume it doesn't need to be anything fancy, he'll probably upgrade to a 12 gauge in a couple years. You also might look at youth models depending on the size of your son. Sometimes they can be a lot more comfortable

NEF makes a single-shot break action for around that. They are very reliable guns and are great 1st guns.
Or you might be able to find an old Remington 870 for that or a little more. Definitely worth the extra price though.
