You cannot read the old testament and the new testament as though they are the same. God's position in the old testament was one of the Law, which no one could abide by...that was the point the whole time and yet so many try to earn their way into heaven by works. So, the position of God in the old testament was designed solely to lead the way to Jesus in the new testament...showing God's true love for us and His mercy. I have no idea what that person was talking about that you copied the text from, but unless it was specifically about the old testament, he/she was likely very off. God is a God of Love and Forgiveness, but this is only to those who choose the follow Him. You choose to go your own way, than you also choose to forego that Love and Forgiveness, as God and Sin cannot co-habitate.

God being a consuming fire is not literal.. its used to describe what God looks like... He's so bright its hard to really see Him....
