but exactly how bad?
i mean is it unbearable? or is it just more painful than other places on your body?
also is there anything you can do to lessen the pain?

I have a tattoo up my side from my hip to my chest. I must say it was quite painful in the rib area, but not unbearable. I think it was worth it.

The pain will lessen with time because the area will eventually go numb (although not completely, it does lessen the pain a little). Tattoos on the ribs are quite painful but not unbearable. If you really want the tattoo the pain is worth it because the end result can be really beautiful.

it really depends on your pain tolerance. i have had my whole back tattooed (which extended out to my ribs a bit) and it did hurt but in a very weird way. i have quite a few friends who have their ribs tattooed so it definitely isn't unbearable. i'm planning on getting mine done one day too.
i also don't agree that the pain numbs over time, i feel that pain worsens after about 2 hours it just gets worse every minute. the best thing to do is to distract yourself from the pain. i am interested in trying self hypnosis and will probably try that when i have my ribs done. definitely don't take anything for the pain because 1. it'll thin your blood and 2. when it's all over you'll be so much more proud of yourself for sticking with it and enduring thru the pain.

It hurts... bad. Not so bad that I dont have tattoos on my ribs but you will feel out of breath while the needle is on your skin. As soon as they lift the pain stops. You can ask for blue gel or elma cream but they wont last for the durration of your tattoo (assuming your tattoo will talke more then 45 minutes). Just keep thinking of how much you will like it when its done! If you need any furthur help just ask, I am an apprentice. Oh, and keep the motrin close at hand.

All my tatts had some kind of weird discomfort, It wasnt exactly pain. My ribs were more uncomfortable than my chest piece but not unbearable, overall a great experiance and im getting my other rib done in 2wks yaaaayy!!1

It is more painfull to get a tatoo on an area with a bone. I don't think there is anything you can do, just focus on something else besides the tatoo. Don't take any asprin or get drunk before gettting a tat. You will bleed more.

you can buy a topical anistethic (spelling?) but you will have to find a shop that will use it some shops already have it you have to pay more for it.
