I only take it for sleep when I have a real problem because I'm afraid I'll become dependent on it. I have a prescription
I have to decide early whether I'm going to take it that night because it puts you out for a long time. If I wait to 2am, it's too late I'll sleep until the afternoon.
It's actually an old antidepressant that had such bad side effects of drowsiness that they now use it for sleep. At least that's what my APRN told me.
Edited to add a link to crazymeds.org... love that site. http://web.archive.org/web/20070819063756/http://www.crazymeds.org/
It has Trazodone on the left under the heading "All about antidepressants."

Oh yes. Trazadone is a wonderful drug. I'm not prescribed to it and don't take it regularly, but I have taken it for recreation. It definitely works. If that doesn't work, you may want to try Seroquel. I have taken that and it knocked me right out. I also have a friend that is prescribed to it for anxiety reasons and she was sleeping 16 hour nights. She had to stop taking it because she slept her day away, but in a lighter dosage, I'm sure it would work wonders for you.

Trazadone is a great sleeping aid. It differs though how a medicine works for someone. It is my experience that by trial and error you will find something that is good for you. Give it a try and you will now the answer :)

You should do what your doctor advises, but you should also educate yourself about your medications. Your library should have a copy of the PDR [Physician's Desk Reference] which has info about medications.
Trazodone is an anti-depressant. It will have different effects on different people. If you need only a sleep aid, you might ask your doctor about Rozerem - it's a non-narcotic sleep agent.
You can also use WebMD.com for info about medications and illnesses, etc.

Definitely. I take it at night to sleep, but take it knowing you will have a full night's rest. You will have the "drug hangover" as I call it if you don't. I was prescribed 100mg tablets, but take 1/4 of the pill and it knocks me out. I usually can't stay asleep without taking it.
