My dad hasn't been able to do any cardio due to knee and hip problems. Is there anything he can do to get his heart rate up?

Thanks.

A recumbent bike is best. It keeps the weight off of the hips and knees.

There are various forms of cardio, for instance walking is actually cardio. It is the simplest and most people can do it with hip and knee issues. A stationary bike or an elliptical trainer are other non-impact options that you can easily get a descent workout on.

Oh, darn. I didn't see the hip problem thingy. I have bad knees and I use the Gazelle, so my knees don't bend. But it is hard on the hips with all the swinging.

There are machines where I work out, that is like peddling a bike but only with your arms? The guys who use it, really work up a sweat.

Swimming? Pullups? Pushups?

Sounds like the cause of the pain is a nerve in your spinal column. The nerve can be radiating down to your knee and leg...Both knees and both legs. Try a pain medication so that you are able to get out of Bed....then walk for a while on a flat level surface. Good Luck.

look up pedal exerciser. its got pedals like a bicycle and you put it up on like a table and use your arms to rotate the pedals. you can get cheap ones for around $30-$40 and good adjustable resistance ones for around $200. i've used them and really like the way it works the upper body and it will get the heart rate up too. / might look up handicapped exercise equipment too. don't know how much money he would want to spend but there are also hand power bicycles if he wanted to exercise outdoors.

Nordic walking. It burns up to 40% more calories than regular walking, you get a total body workout, and it's easy on the joints.

Go on a rollercoaster. It'd be hard for him to much in regards to cardio. Make sure he's eating the healthy foods.
