I hear people talk about it and it sounds like it's something to make cats comfortable but from what I've heard before I thought it was a repellent of some kind to keep them off surfaces you don't want them on, like kitchen counter-tops. I looked at a site online and it wasn't really descriptive on what it is supposed to do exactly and how it works.

Cats scent mark territory around the home, by rubbing their cheeks against paintwork and furniture. Feliway is a synthetic pheromone that mimics the "friendly" scent found in cat's cheek glands. Cats find it comforting to be surrounded by their own smell, and Feliway creates a comforting aroma.

Most often it's used to help relieve stress in cats who are feeling insecure, because of the introduction of another cat, or moving home, nervousness etc.

It can also help as a scratching deterrent. Cats have scent glands in their paws, so they are marking territory both visually and by smell when they scratch somewhere. It is this scent that encourages them to scratch in the same place each time, so as to "top-up" their mark. However, cats don't usually scratch areas that they have chin rubbed. It's said that spraying the area with Feliway once a day for 21 days will break the habit of a cat scratching in a particular spot. Obviously the cat needs to be offered an alternative item that it is allowed to scratch instead.

Can't say I've ever heard of it used as a deterrent in keeping them off kitchen worktops. Putting something that feels uncomfortable underfoot is the best way to stop cats getting on tables and worktops. Again, they need to be offered an alternative outlet for their natural instinct to climb.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it comes in two versions; a spray and a plug-in diffuser.

Feliway won't stop cats from jumping on the counter, but it is useful for other behavioral/stress issues. If an emotional/stress-related problem is causing a cat to urinate outside the box, Feliway helps a *lot* but won't help if it's a medical problem (which calls for a vet anyway). We've used it when introducing a new cat, when moving & before trips to the vet. It seems to work well enough that we like to keep some on hand.

Feliway is made from natural cat phernomes and can be used to reduce stress between or among cats. I feel the diffuser works best. I never had any luck with the spray form.

Flower essences can be used for the same types of problems. They are less expensive than Feliway. You can go to http://www.spiritessence.com to read about their use with cats (and other pets).

im not super familiar with this product, but i have heard reference to, and seen it recommended for a cat that is urinating around the house instead of the litterbox...so it does sound like a repellant, as it was recommended to be sprayed where owners didnt want the cat urinating (when i heard of it).
ps...i could be wrong about this!
