Hello lazaruslong138

Did man actually eat from the tree of knowledge?... or did s/he eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? There is a difference you know.

I see you write " I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. " and I assume that means that you hold yourself personally responsble for all your actions, a viewpoint that I applaud. I also take it from your question that you think knowledge is important. Another viewpoint I applaud.

The difference between your question and the actual biblical statement is crucial. If it is simply the tree of knowledge (a common misconception) from which they were forbidden then one could arguably suggest that biblical religion is anti-intellectual. However, a short perusal of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic writings would reveal that while the three faiths disagree on many points of doctrine, they certainly are *not* anti-intellectual. Some of the greatest scientists and philosophers the world has seen came from one of these three faiths.

So why was Adam told not to eat from the tree of the "knowledge of good and evil", after all, it could be argued that without that knowledge no one could know right from wrong. But I think it is subtler than that, it isn't knowledge *of* good and evil as such, but the desire to *determine for ourselves* what is good and evil.

The ethicist Peter Singer has written that infanticide is morally good and should not be illegal, in his opinion there is no difference between a newborm human and any other animal. Like yourself, Peter Singer has said " I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them." (Actually, he doesn't break them, he advocates changing the rules - but I'm sure you get the point)

So man did not eat from the tree of knowledge, s/he ate from the tree of the knowldge of good and evil, arrogating to himself the power to determine what is good and what is evil. This is "original sin" and one need only look around to see its truth and know that man did not "spit it out", he swallowed it whole and continues the feast to this day.

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

It says they 'did eat', not 'chewed and spit'.
The point, however, is the disobedience. That was the true sin.

hi,

As it´s written: And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3.4-5

The first deceitfull sermon about the inmortality of the soul = (

6 .....she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

That´s all what the Bible says, did ye see that naked is a sign of sin, so when they noted their sin they sewed fig leaves together and made aprons like self-righteousness even as Cain with his "sacrifice" and even as self-justification in such a sistem there´s no faith in the Lamb´s righteousness but in their own aprons = righeousness...

But then in a good christian bood there´s a ligthened quote:

"The instant man accepted the temptations of Satan, and did the very things God had said he should not do, Christ, the Son of God, stood between the living and the dead, saying, "Let the punishment fall on Me. I will stand in man's place. He shall have another chance" (Letter 22, Feb. 13, 1900). {1BC 1085.2}"

Greetings
Grace be with you

We all did, We are born into sin, that is why God gave us the Bible, so we wouldn't form our own conclusions, we have the ability to know the Truth now.
