Hopelessness and helplessness. A feeling that life is not worth living, that nothing will ever get better, and that you have no control over anything.
Suicidal ideation may or may not be present. Sometimes it can be vague, as in "I wish I wasn't here any more" but there is no intent to actually suicide. Sometimes there can be the intent but the motivation is not strong enough to actually allow the person to go through with it. Suicidal ideation with intent and opportunity is the most dangerous situation. These people have the desire to die and the means to do it.
Other symptoms can vary. Sometimes people become very lethargic. They may sleep much of the time, and when they are awake they have little energy or motivation. There can also be an agitated depression. This is when a person cannot sleep, they fell anxious and worried, and they are restless and nervous.
If you are concerned about yourself or someone you care about I urge you to see a doctor. You can make an appointment with your regular doctor or a psychiatrist. When you are in the beginning of depression you feel that nothing you ever do is good.
You can't do anything right. Everything you try to do fails and you feel bad about this and you feel bad ALL THE TIME.
The next thing you feel is that, since everything you do is bad and nothing ever turns out right, why should you even try to do anything?
There's no use in doing anything, nothing will work, nothing will come out right, nothing good will happen, so why even try?
Why get out of bed in the morning?
Why even get dressed?
So then the next thing you feel is that if everything is bad and nothing you do comes out right, and you aren't even going to try, because there is no sense in trying, then why should you even continue to live? What is life for? Why go on?
So you kill yourself to end the problem. But by killing your self, all you have done is given a temporary problem a permanent solution. So suicide that looks so attractive is going to be very painful for you and equally so for those who secretly and silently love you.
The truth is, depression is not caused by you. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain that makes you think the way you do.
Once you get in the mind trap of thinking, "Nothing I do is going to work", then, sure enough, nothing you do WILL work!
So you have to get that attitude adjusted.
What worked for me was Prozac AND IT
WORKED IN THREE DAYS! It was a
a miracle for me. That might be the way
for you.
They have all kinds of pills you can try to
restore the chemical balance in your brain.
Try some. The first one may or may not
work right away.
Some may work only
partially or might have some unusual side
effects along with them, but try something.
Don't just give up. There is a way to beat it.
Some people are more susceptible to
depression than others. The first time I was
depressed, I was 13 yrs old. I was far away
from home in a strange place, in a school
where nobody liked me and I wanted out,
anyway, including horizontal was fine. I am
glad now that I didn't. Try to get some help.

Some signs of depression include weight gain or weight loss, fatigue, crying for no reason at all or finding no interest or enjoyment in things that used to make you happy. Talk to your doctor if you think you may be depressed. They will help you to figure out what is really going on and will prescribe you something. If you dont like taking prescrips, they will give you some options as to what else you can do, like talking to a shrink.

Apart from the obvious signs of feelings of sadness and hopelessness, there are other signs e.g reduced energy or constant tiredness; sleep problems either falling asleep or waking in the early hours when people would normally be asleep;poor appetite; drastic weight loss;irritability; lack of concentration;loss of interest in previous hobbies activities; loss of interest in social activity; obsessive thoughts about death, tragedies, and catastrophic world events. It is important to consult a physician if a number of these signs are present. First the doctor should rule out physical reasons for the symptoms. In the absence of physical reasons, he/she may recommend an appointment with a therapist, and /or prescribe an anti depressant or anxiety reducing medication. If you recognize these signs in someone else make the suggestion that they seek help from their doctor. Remember tho', depression is a condition separate from a rection to to the loss of a loved one, which would be described as grief or mourning.

Gone are the days when mental illness was hushed up and quietly swept under the carpet. Hopefully today, we can face our problems and find solutions.
Depression is a disease like diabetes or high blood pressure. Some people are able to reach the cure for depression through therapy, others through taking medication and therapy for a period of time and yet others who must continue taking medication for the rest of their life. In such a case, it is no different than someone who must take daily injections of Insulin.
It is something, which often lies beyond the control and understanding of the individual and so for people to say ‘just snap out of it’ is very cruel.
Research has shown that a marked majority of cases of severe depression are linked to childhood trauma. Hence the importance of loving and protecting our children in the correct way and dealing with older people, who now suffer from depression with kindness and understanding.
If you know someone who is depressed, they need your help and support, not criticism. Sometimes well meaning friends and relatives understand the importance of the patient ‘talking’ and ‘getting things out of their system’ but often it is not so easy and speaking about past traumas can take a lot of time. Digging through painful memories, which the mind has safely tucked away from sight, requires the care of a specialist. Doctors are well equipped these days to handle all kinds of cases, so helping them to choose an appropriate doctor is a great service.
Above all, prayer and remembrance of Allah (s.w.t.) brings peace to the troubled mind and contains the only sure cure for the heart that cannot find peace.

I fell into a deep depression all at once.I didn't care about my house my self my family.I had thoughts of how I could kill myself and end it all.When I started Hording sleeping pills I knew I was really going to do it.I began to give away my belongings and jewelry and asking people to not forget me and to be kind when they thought of me.It was my secret and I would think of myself in the past tense.I was sitting in my doctors office one day and it just all hit me and I started crying and telling my doctor I didn't want to die and asking for his help and telling how I had been feeling for months.Thank God for intervening and getting me some help.I now take one little pill at night before I go to bed and my life is so full again.I just don't know what happened or why but, I hope it never hits me again.

Well it depends on the severity but normally it can be changes in sleep patterns, eating patterns, crying spells, lack of energy, low motivation, sadness throughout the majority of the day for more days than not, loss of appetite, decreased sexual desire, and so on, these are most common but as I said the severity of the depression and personality of the person can influence these.

some of signs of depression can be lack of energy, inability to concentrate, inability to sleep, not wanting to socialize, not enjoying things you did before, not wanting to leave your home. other signs are feelings of hating yourself, your life, not wanting to eat, or eating constantly. feelings that you just don't feel right for no known reason. feeling isolated, like no body cares, or understands. thoughts of suicide and hurting yourself are not the only signs of depression. if you feel any of the things i mentioned for more than 2 weeks, it's more than the blues. contact your medical doctor so you can have tests done to rule out things such as thyroid, hormones, other medical problems. if all those are ruled out, you can be referred for someone who specializes in depression. whatever your age, don't put this off. find the problem and get it taken care of. it could be something as simple as alot of people feel down around the holidays, which are just a few weeks away to a severe medical or emotional problem. it's always better finding out and nipping it in the bud.
