Everybody is looking for those.
:-)
But fear not. Peak oil is pretty much here and the coming years will see a strong shift in our use of FFs. In effect, the need for further exploration for oil will vane faster than the oil itself.
So if you wanted to get into the oil game, you are about 50 years late.

If you are trying to find a leak in an underground
oil or petrol line:
A magnetometer, (metal detector), will probably
help you locate the line if there's not too much
buried metal about.
Then the best you can do is probe for soil samples,
and test them with detector for volatile vapors.
That should tell you where to dig.
If you're trying to find an oil field, there's a whole
branch of geology dedicated to it.

There is no such thing. If you think you have oil under your property you need to call a geologist, have them take a core sample, research the history of the area and a bunch of other things. And that will just tell you whether or nor there COULD be oil there, only drilling will find out for sure.
I understand that a good oil drill rig goes for about $2.5 million, and the survey mentioned previously will run about $15,000
