No, it is a date of vast scientific and cosmic significance, and those who write if off most likely have not studied the date, though I must say no culture outrightly predicted the end of the world on this day.
December 21, 2012 is the day that we will complete a very rare solar alignment, an alignment 26,000 years in the making to be exact, where our Earth will be directly aligned with the sun and the Milky Way Galaxy. This will create electro magnetic energy, and thus solar flares, like we have not seen in modern times.
Best case scenario we will only have minor power problems in a limited scope. Solar flares do not need an alignment to cause electrical problems, the last time this happened was in 1988, though again, this is nothing compared to the event that will happen in 2012. These possibilities are scientific fact, in addition to these, there are many theories about other things that might happen with the massive amount of energy flowing through our solar system, but again, speculation, though some is based on evidence, we have never seen this alignment occur, so we can not be sure.
The strange thing is is that modern scientists have just found out about this alignment in the last 100 years, but not only the Maya, but several other ancient cultures, were already keen of this date 1,500 years ago. How they figured out this information without the use of modern technology is quite puzzling, but I don't like to speculate. Not only this but the recent book, supposedly authored by Nostradamus, either way dating to around his lifetime and exact area, pinpoints the exact date, and this is without the use of the information of these ancient cultures. The most puzzling however, is the Ancient Chinese calender, dating back about as far as anything we have in existence, around 5,000 years, which when broken down, also points to the exact date.
These go far beyond the realm of coincidence, but I'm not a superstitious man. Though I do recognize, after study (something it seems the majority don't find important), that this is an interesting date, as does most of the scientific community, I will not make any guesses as to what could possibly, or might possibly happen.
This date has nothing in common with Y2K,which was the result of widespread misconceptions, not any evidence.

The chances are very small. There are 3 main theories (at least that I've studied) that say the world is going to end in 2012: Nostradamus, Bible Code, and the Mayan Calendar.
You would think that if more than one source says 2012 is the date, then its true, but look at it from a skeptic's eye:
Nostradamus is bull**** or at least all evidence points to it. His book, the Prophecies, people claim that he predicted both world wars, the September 11 attacks, and more, but if you look at the history, none of the events have been predicted before-hand. His prophecies are written so vague, ambiguous, & "catch-all" so that anything can be interpreted as to been a "actual prediction." His followers will even twist some of the meanings of his words to give evidence of predictions (all after the events happened). Check out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostradamus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mask_of...
The Bible Code also predicts the world will end in 2012. The Bible code claims that there are hidden messages (of future predictions) in the bible using a computer to "decode" the Torah in Hebrew. However, an Australian mathematician also discovered similar hidden messages of future predictions in the book "Moby Dick", the lyrics of rapper Vanilla Ice, and other books. Read...

The Mayans,... well, they couldn't predict the Spanish coming & killing them off, so what would they know about 2012?
The 2005 book "Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy by Geoff Stray" reviews several theories, prophecies and predictions concerning 2012 and finds where authors have used faulty information or have bent the truth to fit their theories.
Nostradamus and Bible Code followers both used the Mayan calendar as a basis for scaring people into their beliefs.
Does that help?

Some say that because they Mayan calender only goes to the year 2012. Is it accurate. Well it could be. It has a one in seven chance of being right on. Although it is written that we are not to know the day or the hour, we are however to know the SEASON. That season is between 2011 and 2018. Here's why . From the time of the restoration of Israel until the destruction of Jerusalem is 70 years which brings us to 2018 but for the sake of God's elect there is a shortening of the SEASON. How much is it shortened? We don't know for sure , that is why we can only know the SEASON. BTW , the world never ends. Only a time period ends , and a new one begins.

*sighs*
The Mayan calendar ends on December of 2012. The Mayans predicted we'd be in a transition from 1987 C.E. to 2012 of that month into a new epoch where great changes will occur.
I don't necessarily believe in this, but the Mayans made several predictions in their time that came true, so perhaps it's worth looking into.
Many people ignore this and think, "Oh. It ends. Must be the end of the world! Let's prepare for our doom!"
Don't listen to them. They don't know what they're talking about.

Yes it is a rumor that's floating around. It's because the Mayan Calendar ends and apparently Nostradamus also predicted it. It'll probably be like all the other times the world was going to end.

Its supposedly the end of the Mayan calander, that about all. Of course if the Mayans were so great at devining the future, I ask you, where are they?
Guess they didnt see thier own demise. I give the Urban legends about the end of the world being 2012 no credit.

They are saying that because the ancient Mayan calender ends at the year 2012. Many scholars and theorists believe that the Mayans had pre-knowledge of when the end will occur and subscribe to this belief.
