study and more study I am afraid lol, but also common sense, compassion and just a caring nature can be a good and often more valuable qualification. There are many places you could volunteer, maybe try the Samaritans as a starting point.Life experiences are helpful and just the desire to really help someone and make a difference in their life no matter how big or small that difference may be. Oh and Joan who answered you, youre never to old to help people Hun, you go for it.
people will ask me often where my insight comes from, my answer is simple, If I have seen further than others, its because I have stood on the shoulders of great teachers.Learn from others and you will be surprised how that influences youre life, have an open mind about therapy and the different types out there that are available, do lots of research. Good luck.

First you go to college, then you go to graduate school!
Look at some college websites to see what you have to do to major in psychology or counseling, etc. See what some of the courses are. Do a search on "Clinical Psychology" - I'll bet you'll get lots of leads.

Customer Support is a field you can approach.
You can speak with folks over the phone, email them to help resolve their problem.
The main thing at this point is to find out what type of company you would be willing to work for. Once that's out of the way, apply there for the position. You'll pick up alot more experience if they see how dedicated you are to helping people.

There are lots of courses in health care-counselling, psychology, nursing, health care assistant etc, ring your local colleges or universities for a prospectus and check out local night classes too as you can get qualifications in some courses

I have always loved helping people too. I often think it should have been my vocation. I am retired now so too late for me.
Perhaps if you get in touch with the college about a course.
Or something to do with hospitals. I don't really know. Good luck. or just look up counsellors in the telephone book and get some hints.
