Who says some of my thoughts aren't God speaking to me via my brain?
The Davidson study out of Wisconsin performed MRIs on Buddhist monks and found taht their disciplines had change dtheir brains - instead of havinga flight response to hearing a woman scream, for example, it triggered compassion. Other studies have shown that when we experience God, there are particular parts of the brain that are active.
When confronted with the evidence on the monks, the Dalai Llama said, essentially, "Yes, this makes sense, that it changes you from the inside out is proof that it works!" And when confronted with the evidence from the brain the Pope responded, essentially, "Ah yes, it makes sense that God would have created us with a way to talk to us built in - this proves that we can hear him!"
The traditional way to tell the difference is to test what is being said against scripture, reason, tradition, experience, and by sharing it among people in the church community. This step is often skipped these days and no doubt people are hearing their unconscious shadows being projected - "God told me to hate you!" for example. But that this happens doesn't mean people do not hear God or that this is substantially different from the experience of hearing your own unconscious.

Believe me when I say that isn't something that we hadn't already questioned and tested and questioned and tested some more before we made any decisions as to validity.
Personally, since I was just a small child around 3-4 yrs of age when I first "heard" God....the answers He gave were things beyond my understanding until, after more questions and answers I "understood" what the "answer" was. I may have a tad more intelligence than some, but, far from a genius, lol...one of my brothers has photographic memory, and my children flaunt their own individual skills in memorization, but, memorization seems to be far, far, FAR beyond my abilities in any measure....and all knowledge was/is usually received the hard way.
Ah well, such is life! :)
***Like others have mentioned....after time, and with God's Holy Spirit, you learn to recognize our Father's voice. :)

Sometimes it is my own thoughts. I usually qualify the statement with, I think God told me to.....
Anyway, most of the time we don't know until it works out.
Although there are times when I "think" something that would not be my own idea. Usually, a good thing that I dont want to do. It is probably God.

When a religious person thinks, he thinks he is hearing from a god, brainwashed, it is only his own thoughts and that can be dangerous because he/she is likely to committ some sort of crime and say that a god told him to do it. This has happend over the years a thousand-fold.
You cannot win with these people because they cannot think for themselves, and when they do, they think it is a `god` talking to hem.

Ah an admirable question... This is what I'd say... You need to get the know the Spirit of God (That - if you're a Christian - lives inside of you...) God sent us this Spirit to live inside of us to comunicate with us... Also he convicts us when we do wrong...
In order to know it's God speaking to you, and not some entanglement with your own thoughts you need to know the Spirit of God... The only way to know the Spirit of God is to spend time with him...

God speaks to you in a voice that is not familiar. If your are hearing yourself and the voice of people that you know are can know it is not the voice of God. When you hear God you hear him in your soul.

Some people percieve their own thoughts as the way in which God is transmitting His word. I don't personally tihnk he would choose this medium, knowing how society takes that as insanity but that's what those people believe and theirs not much you can do about it.

Sometimes I know it is my own thoughts, but sometimes I believe it is God reminding me of what I should be thinking or reminding me of what I may have forgotten...

Lots of times you can't. Lots of times God uses your own thoughts to talk to you.
All you can do is to continuously ask God to enlighten you and guide you in the right paths, and then step out in faith.
