1. Grammar has cases - making it eventually easier for you if you learn russian, polish, latin (or any language that uses cases)
2. similar lexically and grammatically to dutch, danish, norwegian and swedish - so you may want to branch out into one of these once you have german down.

1. It's fun!
2. Because English is a Germanic language, and German will help you understand English better.
3. Then you can understand the true lyrics to "99 Luftballons" by Nena.
4. So if you ever go to Germany, you can get around.
5. Because German is so similar to English.
6. Whenever you watch a movie with German dialogue in it, you can understand it.
7. German is often a second language for Europeans, so why not Americans?
8. Germany has a very rich culture, and learning the language will help you uncover it.

1. If you plan to live in Germany.
2. If you plan to live (or already do) in Switzerland or Austria.
3. If the city you live in has a large German community.
4. Many other languages (such as Norwegian) are similar to German.
5. It's a fun language to learn
6. It's not incredibly difficult to get the grammar down
7. It's good for your brain
8. It'll give you something to do for the next few months.
9. There are many books and websites that can teach you how to speak it.
10. It looks good on a resume if you're bilingual.

1. For communication with people who know German but not any of the languages you already know. Which might include more than just Germans.
2. For untranslated German art (movies, stories, computer games etc), or for movies with subtitles to understand them better.
3. Possibly to be able to work as a translator. But I have no idea how much use there is for German-(your language) in that field.
4. Learning can exercise the brain, slowing its deterioration.

Mostly applies to learning languages in general, of course.

ein. German sounds cool.
zwei. German grammar is not as terrible as it is said to be and will help you get more flexible with your own language.
drei. German is an important language when it comes to business.
vier. When you say you can speak German, people will think you are cool.
fünf. German can help you get a job as a translator while living in a country with delicious food.
sechs. German is scary and you can use it to intimidate people who don't understant it at all.
sieben. Germany is a nice place to live in and if you don't know the language it's going to be kind of hard to live there.
acht. There are beautiful works of literature written in German and only if you learn the language you will be able to fully appreciate them.
neun. if you manage to master German you will have a better opinion of yourself and as a consequence your whole life will improve.

1 - so you can speak with Germans, Austrians and the Swiss
2 - it's fun (personally, it makes me giggle! Expressions like "Weltschmerz", or "Ohne Salz und Schmalz" or "Gemutlichkeit / Vertraglichkeit" or "Uberzuckert" !!! or Welteinsmkeit .... my own list goes on and on
3 - the Germans & Austrians are great cooks and their cookbooks are written in German which gives one more cuisine to enjoy and it makes your Christmas better (all those Lebkuchen, the Stollen, all the pretty Advent Calendars and pretty things for the children)
4 - German poetry in the original language is fantastic
5 - to read Thomas Mann and other novelists
6 - to sing German / Austrian opera and operetta
7 - it is good for your mind - it uses all sorts of different forms (cases, tenses, declensions) which is like a game if you like mind games
8 - to get around whilst travelling in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland
9 - to do business with German-speaking ppl.
10 - you can get a job in linguistics: teaching, translating, as a bi-lingual secretary
11 - it elevates your mind and spirit because of the way it uses thought
12 - you can read German periodicals and newspapers in the original language which increases your awareness of the world through their point of view...they introduce you to a German way of thinking about things and finally you know what Lederhosen and Dirndls look like, so you see Salzburg & Vienna at least in pictures ..so you see the farmhouses and ski chalets ... (but that is just me....)
13 - it enhances your comprehension of English due to the cognates and linkages

If it's for long run profession functions I could say Chinese after which Spanish; nevertheless, Chinese is EXTREMELY intricate to grasp. Spanish is a first-class language and spoken for the period of the arena and is valuable in trade as good. French and German also are first-class, however I feel you could get extra out of Chinese or Spanish.

There is only one good reason. I was learning four languages, and I wanted to learn all of them. Nobody asked me to do it. Determination is the only good reason anyone can have. And it's the only reason that's strong enough to give the persistence.
