Ask them what is going to happen next month.
If it happens then ask them for the lottery numbers.

All prophets are fake while alive, take Jesus for example. not everyone believed him and he preformed miracles and still not everyone believed, or believes him today. Muhammad is the same way, he took an army of under 1000 and beat 100,000, because of his beliefs.
Modern day prophets face the same uphill battles today, and may never be considered actually Prophets, until something happens to them after death.
Hell even saint hood is harder to get, Mother Teresa's isn't getting it because she doubted that there is a God, and rightfully so, how could an all powerful God leave so many without. See the 'real' world and you will agree.

Well I don't know if he fits your description of a "modern-day prophet", but Oral Roberts claimed that God told him to raise 8 million dollars to keep the City of Faith going, or He would kill Oral Roberts. After he raised the money, he claimed that there was 1 million dollars more than was needed. Eight months later, the City of Faith failed and the whole operation closed.
That pretty much PROVES he is a fake in my eyes.
God Bless

What 'proof' do you require? Are you seeking signs?
I have more than sufficient 'proof' through asking and having my prayers answered. And I have also witnessed the 'mantle' as it passed from one prophet to the next - it is very real to spiritual eyes. I have felt the love of my Father in Heaven delivered personally through his prophet here on earth [Gordon B Hinckley]. I will bear my personal witness in any court of law that GBH is a prophet of God, called by God to lead His church at this time.
This is a question which you are entitled to receive an answer from on High. 'Ask and ye shall receive, knock and it shall be opened up to you.' 'If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God...' Take 15 or 20 minutes, listen or read President Hinckley's most recent Conference address [see link below] and ask for yourself. The most honest answer you can ever receive is the one you receive from God.

The modern day prophet is a teacher of God's Word.
If one is so-called prophetic, he is not of God.
Christ speaking
Mark 13:23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

The only proof would be if they consistently predicted things that actually happened. This is not and has never been the case. What about our own Biblical prophets? Look at it this way, anybody could go out to the desert, fast for 40 days, and have all the visions--hallucinations, you could ever want!

For starters, if they don't all agree with each other some of them have to be fake. Modern-day "prophets" usually are wrong about their prophesies.

the best way to prove such a thing is to take a look at their prophecies - if even one is wrong, then they are a fake.
if the prophecies are vague, and could be taken various ways, then they are likely to be fake. A true prophet should be able to say clearly what they believe is going to happen...

YES.
The proof has to derive(evolve) from the understanding or proof of the 'Ancient-day prophets!
If both offer the same - it is proof.
But unfortunately we did not live at that time and have to believe the misinterpreters who have (d)evolved over time.

Yes. easily done. Who do you think would be the one true source that would know the answer? God himself, wouldn't he?
So follow a formula of being sincere, contrite, and earnest in heart. Study the "fruits" of the so-called prophets. Are they of God. Ask God in prayer. He will tell you his answer.

You have to compare what they say and how they act to what the Bible says. If they aren't following the Bible's teaching, they are a false prophet.
