Someone brought up this issue yesterday and told of a study that found that there is no difference. I would search through the answers of last night.

Actually this is a very tired old question which has been asked and answered hundreds of times in this forum. You know that religious belief or non belief has nothing to do with IQ. You simply want to bait Christians into an argument or offend them. That's probably the reason you don't get an intelligent answer the Christians are busy answering questions which require much deeper thought. Have a nice day Pat.

It's not a matter of IQ scores, it's a matter of what is in your heart that makes you intelligent or not. If you believe in God, your IQ score really doesn't mean much to Him. Nothing makes me more intelligent than being able to see what God is guiding me to learn. The lessons He has taught me are far more valuable than how well I learned math or any other subject. IQ scores are just a matter of receiving information, absorbing it and retaining it. That's it. The direction the person chooses to use the information learned, is the intelligent part.

Hmm.

Haven't seen THIS question in a couple of days.

Answer: There's probably very little, if any, difference between the two groups.

Further, you might want to consider breaking your "religous" fanatics into defined categories.

IQ does not correlate to religious belief, in other words there are the same percentages of high IQ in both. What does correlate is development of cognitive skills in inverse, that is the more developed your cognitive skills (objectivity, logic, education level, etc) are the more likely you are to be atheist and the opposite for believing.

Edit:
If you look across the studies done over the last 50 or so years, there is no correlation between IQ and belief.

Individuals whose parents had high IQs and were well nurished during fetal development, and have had healthy balanced diets growning up and a well rounded education have the highest IQs. Basically it is all in the genes.

Y'know - I'm not sure if there's really ever been a scientific study on this... to compare "fanatics" versus atheists. (I wouldn't automatically classify someone who is deeply religious as a "fanatic") -- You have people like Jim Jones and David Karesh who were definately fanatics - but also HIGHLY intelligent & influential people.

This is a tough one.

For sure Atheists. There have already been studies done. The higher the IQ, the less likely the person is to believe in God.

It has been proven that as religiousness increases, intelligence decreases. But that doesn't necessarily refer to atheism. But you could very easily deduce that yes, as you increase intelligence, you have a higher chance of being atheist.

It's been well established that Atheists, by far, have higher IQ's and usually, better education.
