Can I go to the US, via land as a non-citizen of Canada. I've yet to do my citizenship, thus don't have a passport. I do not have a Cdn birthcertificate obviously, so what nec. documents would I need to make it across the border without too much difficulty? I know the rules are different for air/sea. A passport is necessary for that travel. And when does the new rule of passport via land come into effect? I've ready so many different things.
Thanks

You Must have a passport to travel to the United States by any means. The ability to travel within North America by land for a few more months without a passport, applies ONLY to American, Mexican, and Canadian citizens. You may also need a visa...depending on what country you are from. What happened to your passport? You had to have one from your home country when you entered Canada. You must continue to use THAT passport until you become a Canadian citizen and can have a Canadian passport. Are you actually a permanent resident of Canada...or not? You can go to the website below and fill in the blanks for nationality, alien resident, and destination, and click for the info. Then it will tell you whether or not you need a visa to visit the U.S.

Your friend's permanent resident card (or "green card") is sufficient for re-entry into the US from Canada. As it already estabishes her right to lawfully be in the US, there is no need to obtain a visa or other documentation to re-enter the US.

Since early this year, a passport has been required.

Before you leave Canada, check the re-entry restrictions on your visa. Some visas, such as a study permit, do not guarantee re-entry.

Check with the US consulate in your city. Set a good example by not invading another country.

The passport law is in effect, and I don't understand why you don't have one.
