The groom, officiant, witnesses, marriage license being a given, what are the elements that you are not budging on for your own wedding? For example: a particular venue, a favorite restaurant doing catering, whatever it may be.

I assume you want an answer to help you cut down on costs while still having a beautiful wedding. In that case, aside from the obvious (groom, officiant, license, and 2 witnesses) these items were most important to me:
*good photographer: talented, reasonably priced, pictures available on CD after the wedding
*unique venue: no wedding-factories!
*delicious food: interesting appetizers and quality meal!

I skipped things like the limo, floral centerpieces, and chair covers. Save some money and toss the favors, too.

Get what really matters to you and don't spend tons of money on things that don't.

A groom, a marriage license, an officiant and two witnesses.

My fiance, a license, an officiant and two witnesses. Everything else is gravy. However, given those things, we know we want to have an unusual venue (no hotels or country clubs) and a lot of fun (good food, open bar, good music). Given those parameters, everything else is negotiable.

Besides the obvious - groom, officiant, license - I think you mean what things are really important to each of us to have at/for our wedding that we don't want to compromise on:
For me, it is the date. I have my heart set on a particular date, fortunately, it is fine with my fiance.
My fiance & I are music lovers and are very particular. We both agreed that if the DJ differs from our song list that we'd beat him up (not really, but his tip would be nil).

Besides the groom and license a necessity for the reception would be the dress, photographer and D.J. I wouldn't necessarily call them "must-haves" because it sounds to demanding. They are simply the three things I put the most emphasis on.

lets see--

You need a bride and groom, 2 witnesses, a legal licence to marry, and someone to legally perform the marriage.

Outside of that--you don't NEED anything.

I'm assuming you mean besides the groom, officant, etc. (all the legal stuff)

Most important to me was good pictures.

Most important to my groom was good food.

I had to have a band. A DJ always feels like a high school dance and isn't as elegant and festive as a band.
