This bigot guy at work said to my friend, who was born in Vietnam in 1975, that he's "pretty much Chinese" because when the Chinese invaded Vietnam they raped all their women and took their stuff and so everyone in Vietnam is partially Chinese.

Did I miss this part in History class? LOL

No, I'm not at all. His parents came over on the very last exodus. So, he was raised here and unfortunately doesn't know everything about his heritage. He was pretty offended and said he had no idea what the guy was talking about either.

Yes, you did miss that part. China invaded and colonized Vietnam for hundreds of years.

However, while your friend might consider himself "pretty much chinese," actual chinese will not consider him chinese at all.

In fact, they will look down on him for the most part. Especially the older generation. Many chinese families will not approve of their children marrying vietnamese men or women.

Actually the Chinese did invade or try to invade Vietnam after the U.S. withdrawal; they did not get far and the Vietnamese did repulse them. Most of "French Indo-China" the area including Vietnam was once a colony of China until they were forced out by a local revolution; then came the Japanese, then the French and then the communist. Most Vietnamese have some Chonese blood in them, the Chinese did control the area for a long period of time, did move Chinese into the area in the past but you friend is a bigot and an idiot. Most Americans have some German, Englsh and Native American blood but that has little to do with rape and more to do with over years the families intermingle.

The Vietnamese have known war for nearly a thousand years and of all their opponents the Chinese ranked first. At seven times in history the Chinese controlled the vast majorities of Southeast Asia only to be repulsed whenever the Chinese Empire weakened from time to time. During the Vietnam conflict it was determined that the Mountain tribes were the true Vietnamese people while the low landers and city dwellers were more closely related to their Chinese rulers. Most of the cross breeds that were killed following the 2nd World War were Chinese-Vietnamese and Japanese off springs.

So you are saying that a guy born in Vietnam wouldnt know more about the Chinese involvement there than you?

Seriously though I dont know the answer. The Japanese raped a lot of women in China, IndoChina and the Pacific during WWII though- I know this is of no help- sorry

GoodDaddy is sweet. China, because of the fact the 1st day of Vietnam, has consistently invaded the smaller Southern neighbor, in common terms to be repelled. even whilst China became conquered by using the Mongols, the invasion happened two times and two times repelled.

I don't think China officially invaded Viet Nam. I thought it was mainly Vietnamese communist guerillas, supplied with Russian weapons, that did the fighting. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if there were also a lot of Chinese mercenaries involved in the fighting too. I think China may have been too preoccupied getting their own house in order after their Red Revolution to do any official invading.

After Saigon fell and South Vietnam was annexed by North Vietnam, authorities in Hanoi began persecuting ethnic Chinese in the country and large numbers of them fled, including many refugees who made their way to Taiwan.

Things got even worse after the events of late 1978 and early 1979, when Vietnam invaded and occupied Cambodia, triggering mainland China's brief "war of punishment" against Vietnam.

No you missed nothing. It's not taught. Great portions of history are skipped as we would never get out of school otherwise.

During parts of Chinese imperial history, China did indeed occupy and rule what is now Vietnam. Vietnamese culture flourished even during this period.

Tell the bigot he's wrong about the ethnic makeup of Vietnam.

Kinh (Viet) 86.2%, Tay 1.9%, Thai 1.7%, Muong 1.5%, Khome 1.4%, Hoa 1.1%, Nun 1.1%, Hmong 1%, others 4.1% (1999 census)

Vietnam and Korea have been step-children to the Chinese for all of written history. As for his claim the story told to him by his family might be a little distorted.
