"Young virgin auto-sodomized by her own chastity"
It sounds to be a reference to masturbation. The painting looks to have a bunch of phallus' flying around as well. What was Mr. Dali's inspiration for making this piece, and what did he have it represent?

Scroll down and read quotes from the book Dali, by Robert Radford.

I believe only the artist himself could have answered your question. If you have read a little about him, you would understand that he was a special man. He could eat rotten cheese for the sole purpose of having hallucination in order to be inspired for a painting.

I don't think Salvadore meant harm in this painting, more like a message. I see no reference to masturbation as you mentionned. I do not even understand why you even spoke about self-gratification as it doesn't even stand close to it.

After all, even if this piece is surrealistic, you don't have to go that far....

Dali wrote a number of autobiographical works. He speaks about his "innner-uterine" memories. From his writtings I think you can get a pretty good feel for how he thinks about himself and his work.

I see his work as a lifetime of adolescent memories addressed as art.

Two things money and shock value. If you look at his picture you will see a man who revels in being different.
