Coming from a sideways approach, my answer does not answer your question head-on.

A couple of years ago, on a morning TV news show, I saw SAD (depression due to low light levels) approached. One of the things they tried, was the application of the correct artificial light spectrum to - of all places - the back of the knee. That light therapy application - to an area other than the face and eyes was found to be successful and therapeutic to the participants suffering with SAD.

The conclusion of that particular study was that light therapy, applied to the body, rather than the eyes was found to be valid and useful for persons with SAD.
