What worked for both my daughter and my son is The Potty Stool http://www.thepottystool.com I started by just setting it at the toilet. This stool makes every toilet kid-sized. My kids immediately climbed up on this stool and discovered that they could safely and securely use the toilet. This got them very interested in using the toilet and they were potty trained very quickly. Kids like to use what they know mommy and daddy use. And it really is wonderful having your kids independently use the toilet on their own. The handles make all the difference --both felt comfortable and were relaxed enough to have easy bowel movements.

It really helped my son to learn to pee standing up so he could see what was happening and connect the sensations.

I like that I don't have to double the steps of potty training by training them first in a potty and then training them to stop using a potty. And not dumping and cleaning a potty each time is great. The best thing is that kids use it for years. I hope this helps you

first of all, take him to the doctor and make sure his muscles are working correctly and he knows ahead of time when he has to go. if it just a matter of preference, make a game of it. for urinating, i put a sticker of an airplain on the inside back of the toilet and told him, "i bet you can't pee pee on the plane!!" he tought it was a good challange and would do it. if it is potty, make sure he has a seat that is small enough he wont fall in the toilet and he sits comfortably on it and have a small step stool (about 4" tall) so he can get on and off the toilet comfortably. i have never seen this type of stool for sale, so we make one out of plywood (for the flat piece) and 2x4 (for the frame). it is not too tall and not too short. good luck!! remember, he will grow out of it, he cannot go in his pants forever.

I was potty trained when younger sitting on the potty watching my favorite tv show. Put the potty chair in front of the tv and let him or her watch a cartoon or a favorite show. Try rewarding him for good behavior.
