Unfortunately, comparative religion, understanding other cultures, and even understanding of ones own family's religion and culture is something that is severely neglected in most homes.

Children are picking up all sorts of slang and mis-understanding about religion, spirituality, and ideology on the playground, on the streets, and even at the mall ("these strange but nice people at a table at the mall gave me a magazine for free; they seem to have the answer to everything).

When kids try to talk to their parents about it, many parents get embarrassed or use really technical speech that does not really answer their children's questions.

Unfortunately, schools are not the answers either. Too many of the parents that do talk to their children do not want the schools interfering with their programming.

I do not think that their is any other choice but to form a non-Abrahamic version of social outreach groups like The Boy Scouts and Big Brothers/Sisters.
We could bring the gift of logic to impoverished pregnant teenagers living in the most religious parts of town.

Most parents probably don't teach their kids about safe sects, so i think the schools should do it. I'm really baffled by parents who complain when their children are taught about certain topics

I think that schools should teach safe sects to educate the poor children of Bible thumpers that there are better ways to live than the Xian sect.

No, sects and cults are far more damaging than religion alone. Neither parents nor teachers should teach this to children.

the sad thing is that even if school were to teach ALL religions from a historical vantage point, someone would be offended that their child had to hear about the heathens...(i.e. anyone different from them)

it's as sad as not teaching about safe Sex so that kids will maintain abstinence... how well has that worked for ya?

Oh wait... that was the point huh?

Schools should teach the characteristics of cults, but leave actual religious education up to the parents.

That depends if the teen is willing to listen and the parent promises not to lecture. Thats why kids don't listen half the time. It should be taught by the parents, but parents should be willing to listen as well as speak

Only in the lunchroom. Pastafarians should be given full control over the preparation of meal to ensure that the children get adequate servings of carbohydrates and marinara.
