Why is prejudice against women so prevalent in all the major religions as well as in society in general?

Because the male is held as the norm, and the female is sub-norm.

Ironic, since we all start out as females and males are mutations of the female.

Go figure.

wrong Views.
i have been hit by a woman in a pub for no reason but if i had hit back in retaliation then i would of been looked upon as a woman beater even though i was defending myself, (hypothetical i did not retaliate with like) but as the role of women in sociaty has changed men are left with not knowing what to do if they open a door out of politenes they can be given a dirty look and if they dont the same can happen, simple courtesies that were once common have been put aside so as to ensure they are not met with a rude reaction.
i dont know about other religions so i wont comment on religion in general, but sociaty roles have changed and that although good on one hand nothing has filled that void, and as a result many of the benefits that where once taken for granted are now a thing of the past with people not knowing how to cook so live off of junk food, the home is now getting more full of gizmos which are not needed, due to the extra pay, and children are being left in the hands of straingers so the bond with parents are not developing strongly egnuff, or the state is paying single mothers to do nothing and thus give no work ethic to the children.
i think this is just as much a prejudice as labling someone as a weak femail, or what ever else people use. of not having equality among everyone.and as some women get higher powered jobs or higher possitions they seem to become nastier and bullie in most cases i have heard men, so women arn't doing themselves any favours to change or to allow men not to seam shovinistic although their are some who are but their are those who arn't untill something happens to change their minds.

It's an old heritage first gained through tribal behavior, then institutionalized as tradition, then transmitted in the legal system.

Men are agressive creatures who base their status on physical strength and ability to submit others. Given that women are physically 20% weaker than males because of their lesser production of testosterone, many societies have used this excuse to submit women and pretend it was the will of God.

Given the gentler, more empathic and "motherly" nature of human female, this institutionalization often dictates that women are solely responsible for raising children and the failure in relationships within the familial unit.

Most of this is actually cultural, rather than religious. Christianity was actually pretty woman friendly until the Romans took it over. Judaism is usually pretty cool, too, depending on where it's practised. Islam, here again, mainly cultural, though it's harder to distinguish because of where it's usually practised. No major religion, that I know of actually teaches the subjugation or abuse of women in it's word (ie the Bible, Torah, Qua'ran).

Because of Man
Man is the one who rules Religion
Man thinks he is the ruler of all, thus, prejudice against women

Women are crafty and wise. Soft yet unyieldingly strong. Nurturing and compassionate. Mothers bring young into a world ruled by the competitiveness of Man.

Men are driven by competition, as witnessed by history past and present. The wisdom and grace of women is viewed as a non-issue in the world of competition and (hierarchy system understood only by men).

Women in all major religions, over history, were stamped out by men. Women are not violent by nature, rather, seekers of harmony.

It's obvious when understood in context, why there is prejudice against women.

I am a Christian woman. I do not experience any prejudice against me. I am loved by my Lord, and treated with respect and love by my husband and friends. I have never experienced it but then, Christianity is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, not a religion.

because of the corruption of the teachings of man -- and not all 'major religions' support a prejudice against women - anything which is degrading or demeaning of a daughter of God is not pleasing in the eyes of God.

I would think its prevalant in society.
Religions are by-products of society, so the views of society is what shapes the religion.
If the society is patriarchal, then yeah.

They aren't. It's a myth. Try focusing on the true nature of religion and decide how it effects you, you'll be much better off than if you are always trying to find reason/excuses not to believe.
