Should police officers be punished harsher for crimes than regular citizens? I know they serve the community and do a lot of good so that makes me want to say no, however when a police officer breaks the law it ruins the reputation of police, the government as a whole, the city, state, etc. It also hurt the faith of the rest of us in the police so for that reason I say yes. What do you think?

If it's a crime done under color of authority -- that is, that they used their position as a police officer to help them commit the crime, then yes, they should be punished severely.

At the other end of the scale, I don't think cops should be penalized more for an off-duty speeding ticket than I would be.

I've know a number of officers who found themselves in conflict with the law and they were eventually punished for their offense.

Most citizens who violate the law are punished accordingly and if their offense does not involve their employer they continue to work at the same job with no problems.

Officers on the other hand are more than likely to loose their job, their career and their ability to make a living once they violate the law. I am sure that many of you will say that such punishment is deserving and I must agree for the most part but my point is that officers while held to a higher standard are in fact punished to a greater degree than the average person.

Yes. I frown on police officers who behave this way (thank God this doesn't constitute to ALL cops.) It makes me sick that these cops think they can do whatever they want, and make false arrests on people who may not have even committed a crime just because they carry the badge. What disturbs me are cops who break the law and act so corrupt to get a point across, usually, "I'm above the law because I carry a badge and gun, and cops should be free to make their own rules on the streets." I DON'T THINK SO!!! You have to serve the public, help those who need it, and set an example for the rest of the citizens by following the laws. Those who carry a "holier-than-thou" attitude need to consider a career change.

Yes, because they know better. They are setting an example to be followed by pursuing a career in that field of work.

Yes, they are looked up to by many and if they do wrong, they should suffer a stiffer punishment.
