The problem is that we are identified with our mind and personality, believing that what we think and feel is our true self. When you express anything, even this question it is 'your personality' asking this question but your true self probably had some input into asking this kind of question. The essence of who you truly are wants to awaken, that is true for everybody.

The personality developes from the time one is born and gets bigger and bigger as one ages. As it gets bigger then it starts to cause more problems for us, if not in conflicts with others then with our health. The fact it is growing bigger or developing in complexity, means that more energy of the body is being diverted to this structure. As more energy goes into this structure, then the rest of the body suffers. Eventually the difficulties or problems one faces bring one to the point to start to question oneself - to question one's own personality - how one percieves the world and oneself. It usually takes pain to motivate people to change their ways and when the ego gets really large then it causes this pain. It's like a big cancer in the body growing bigger and bigger. Then when the pain is unbearable people become ready to 'surrender' or admit that they don't have all the answers, the feeling of knowing who one is becomes very shaky.

So to find out about the aspect of personality and to awaken one needs to learn how to surrender. When one surrenders then energy is withdrawn from the structure of personality, some energy is released back into the body and a change is made and the result is one is more aware - more awake.

The practise of meditation is the practise of surrender, one learns how to withdraw energy away from being the thinking and feeling one. So the key is to practise as much as possible, then you will awaken -- but it doesn't happen all at once. It's a growing process. Energy is withdrawn slowly from the personality, beliefs, concepts, errors in perception are dropped and awareness rises in place of what was dropped.

So to state it more precise the key is to surrender, and this can be done by diving into the question: "Who am I?"

Pay attention to this moment and everything in it.
Pay attention to the silence between the thoughts in your head. Just stop labeling everything and look at what is really here in this moment. There are many keys, most take no time or thought at all.

First you must recognize that there is a God and your not Him.
Second: reflection on who you are and who you want to become.
We can not take anything out of this world except who we have become. How easy it is to forget that.
