What is the origin of the term "Sino" when used in lieu of the term China?

I am thinking of the term Sino-Soviet block meaning the combination of China and the USSR and current things like SINOPEC, China's petrol company.

Sino means "Chinese". It is derived from the most common language in China.

Similar to the word "Nippon" being used for Japan.
