I kept hearing on Saturdays Bush race that 2 cars were penalized for having illegal lugnuts. I hane not heard anything else on this. Does anyone know what they were refering to?? I really want to know. I have searched all over the Nascar.com page, yahoo and several other pages with no reference to the "illegal" lugnuts. As long as they were holding the tire on...whats the problem?

Teams have tried everything to gain an advantage, including removing some of the threads from the inside of the lug nuts to reduce the amount of revolutions needed to tighten them up, therefore reducing the amount of time needed to get them tight.
NASCAR has deemed this practice unsafe. The removal of the threads also removes the holding force (in theory at least, and that's all they care about) of the nut to the wheel, possibly allowing them to come off before they would have under normal conditions, or during a wreck.

It's a legitimate question, and some of the answers above hit the nail right on the head. You can modify the lug nut so that it goes on quicker and still holds the tire on. The problem is that it compromises the integrity of the lug nut itself. That is probably the most stupid place to try and gain an advantage.

"Gee, let's tweak with the thing that holds the wheels on the car."

I think any team that is caught cheating where it compromises the safety of the car should get the most severe fine in the book.

To me, Biden is so needless to say the main suitable guy or woman to be president. Edwards quite has not greater journey than Obamma yet they the two look have some famous guy or woman-skill. If Sen. Clinton is nominated, i will nicely vote for a Republican for the 1st time by using fact that I registered in 1972.

Not only does it take fewer revolutions to tighten nuts doctored in this manner, it also reduces the likelihood of cross-threading them. However, it totally compromises their holding ability.

I think they are referring to the threads per inch. More threads per inch is more likely to stay tight. Less threads per inch would be more likely to come loose.
Hope that helps!
