There is no single sensible answer to this question. English is a living language. It grows everyday. If you look at how many words were in a dictionary 10 years ago in comparison to a dictionary of today you would find quite a difference. There is also the fact that one word may mean many things. One word could be a noun and then a verb. At best one could say perhaps a quater of a million words exsist but the average being used is about 180,000. The average persons uses around 10,000 to 20,000 words

I know a real lot but wether I use them every day is another story. Whe I use the spell checker I am not surprised because I am not very good at spelling the words I know but I can use them and I am very pleased that I can because I am not deaf and I am not dumb so I am happy about that what do you say?

I've never counted. But I would say that my vocabulary is extensive.
