The girl that does my nails has been trying to get her parents to the states from Thailand. Everything is almost set and they will be here soon. Her mom is in her 60's and her dad is in his 70's.

She is so sweet and so excited for them to be coming. I want to get them a small welcome gift.

Since they are from Thailand, what should I get them? I want it to be something they can enjoy - maybe something for their bedroom or part of the house. I don't want to get them something America themed, if you know what I mean.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, my wife if from Thailand and we know a lot of Thai people and I can tell you that one thing Thai people live for is eating.
You could possibly put together a basket for them. Maybe something you baked (or not) and some different types of local fruits. I'm just thinking if I gave my wife's family this it would be a big hit. Thais love fresh fruit.

If her family are like the majority of families and people in Thailand, ANY gift would be most gratefully and graciously received. Don't go too far overboard because life is very simple over here. By this, I do not wish to be condescending, but because I have been in this situation with my wife's parents. If you give them something too way out or even too western, they often don't know quite what to do with it, so go for something small and maybe personal. Like I said, whatever you give them, they will treasure your gift immensely.

Why wouldn't you get them something American themed? I mean they are coming to America right?

What if you went all the way to Thailand and they gave you a BigMac as a present?

Go with something they are not used to seeing. I'm sure they would be appreciative.

Twelve is quite right, Thais do love food. Fruits and cakes will be good, as western food will seem bland to their taste. Plums, prunes, grapefruit, bananas and others will be great. Also, they will probably have mant Thai-themed decorations with them already, so something American will be fine for them. Need not be elaborate, something simple will be good.
