Now Medusa alone was mortal; for that reason Perseus was sent to fetch her head. But the Gorgons had heads twined about with the scales of dragons, and great tusks like swine's, and brazen hands, and golden wings, by which they flew; and they turned to stone such as beheld them. So Perseus stood over them as they slept, and while Athena guided his hand and he looked with averted gaze on a brazen shield, in which he beheld the image of the Gorgon, he beheaded her. When her head was cut off, there sprang from the Gorgon the winged horse Pegasus and Chrysaor, the father of Geryon; these she had by Poseidon.

Ora soltanto Medusa era mortale; per questa ragione Perseo fu mandato a mozzare la sua testa. Ma le Gorgone avevano teste attorcigliate quasi come le squame dei draghi e grandi zanne come quelle dei porci, e mani di ottone ed ali dorate, con le quali volavano, e trasformavano in pietra quelli che le guardavano. Perciò Perseo piombò loro addosso appena si addormentarono e mentre Atena guidava la sua mano e lui guardava attentamente in uno scudo di ottone, nel quale vedeva riflessa l'immagine della Gorgona, la decapitò. Appena la sua testa fu tagliata, dalla Gorgona spuntò fuori il cavallo alato Pegaso e Crisaore, il padre di Gerione; lei (Medusa) aveva avuto questi (in dono) da Poseidone.
