I recently picked up an onkyo 304 with 5.1 channels. My new hd-dvd can output 7.1 via hdmi or 5.1 via optical..

Is it worth it to upgrade a new receiver to get those two additoinal channels or not so much?

I am coming form just a 2 channel and the 5.1 is simply amazing to me.

As a custom home theater installer. I say yes.

But you have to make sure it's install right.

Do you have the room for it. And here something that can tell you if it's worth not doing... Is your main seating area up against the rear wall of the room and if it is... Can you move it out from the wall? If you answered No to this question. Your not going to get the best benefits for the extra equipment you'll have to buy. It's still better... Just not as nice as it could be.

look at this link from THX...

If your can and have the means. I would "Highly" Suggest installing 7.1

It really helps reproduce the sound field the editor wants you to hear.

It is really going to depend on what you have for: room size, equipment and specific application to make that decision, as well as personal choice.

5.1 as u may know is 5 speakers plus 1 sub woofer. 7.1 is 7 speakers and 1 sub. If u have a huge room, then I would suggest a 7.1 setup, but if ur happy with 5.1, stay with it. I think 7.1 is just too much, but thats just me.

Yes a difference of 2. LOL
Well anyway it usually makes a difference in larger rooms but if the room is small you wont notice anything different.
