I have had my 9 month old Maltese for a little over 2 weeks now, he has finally got used to being here and is showing his true colors...lol..he barks at everyone that comes in the house, or people outside when I take him out, or noises that sound like the door....he will continually bark at people when they come over until they leave, how can I help him stop? I have heard that he is just protecting us..I don't want to use any type of shock collar.

You need to socialize him and take him to training. Also, when he barks - you need to ignore him until he calms down. When he calms down, praise him and pay attention to him. This will show him that the behavior you want is the behavior he wants to have (beacuse it results in loves from him people!)

Good for you on not wanting to use a shock collar - they are extremely dangerous for dogs his size (or lack thereof).

If the above doesn't work, buy a book on Maltese (petco has some good ones) and see what they recommend that's breed specific.

Good luck!

The dog is barking because you allow it, insist that he stop by giving him a quick nudge and the command no ( actually any word or noise will do such as stop, quiet, hush, shhhh). A collar and leash (a choker chain works best, but only if you know how to use it properly) will give you more control, with a firm but gentle tug as you give the command. The barking will not disappear overnight and you must be consistent. If you are you will be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to train your dog. Remember, you are the boss, not him, and if you act like the boss he will respond. Good luck.

Try a squirt bottle or rolled up newspaper. Try not to get onto him too much when people come over because it just heightens his excitement. If none of this works try contacting a local animal shelter and talking to someone that knows dogs pretty well. They often have staff that can give you suggestions on unwanted behavior because they have to help people with stuff like that so they don't get more dogs in the shelter.
