Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him ordered Muslims to grow beards, because he didn't want them to look like the Pagans. It was important back then for Muslims to look different than the Pagans for both security and cultural reasons. By making it easier for Muslims to distinguish each others easily, it would certainly enforce safety and security among them. Also, by making Muslims be different than everyone else, it would certainly help them to give up their old Pagan traditions that they were raised with, especially when they're different than everyone else.

Besides, growing beards 1400 years ago was a common thing among all men from all nations. Growing beards might be encouraged, but is not mandatory in Islam. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him had reasons for his time only, 1400 years ago, to command the Muslims to grow beards. This doesn't mean that these reasons have to exist today.

Islam is a rational religion. Even though, many Muslims grow beards even today they have to face trouble in the West because of it. This also explains why many Muslims don't grow beards.

A few people on here hit the nail straight up. Firstly its an act to follow a life as closely as possible to the prophet Mohammad as he would have been the most perfect Muslim of all. It could be also an interpretation as in when Mohammad asks Muslims to follow him, many may take it literally and of course in those days beards were popular especially with the less well off as mentioned or possible the learned as they have It as a sign of humbleness and humility showing that they are not concerned about looking good and make no effort to show any features and thus life is concentrated on God and seeking the beauty within. Also Zee mentioned it being appropriate for those times which I sort of agree with. Whether the reasons were to distinguish between paganism and Islam is a very gray area, but having a beard may have had a meaningful purpose relating to those times and thus its may have been a requirement or necessity. However as times have changed it is no longer the case and so having a beard is more to choice rather than necessity or requirement. But one thing I do not agree on is that it is a method to distinguish between other cultures and have it as almost as if it were a trade mark.

Its like in Sikhism they wear a certain type of turban and grow beards and look after their hair and wear a bangle and as required, loose clothing is worn and they carry a sword/dagger. Many Sikhs I know say the beard and turban is to show who they are and stand out as Sikhs and the bangle is a symbol of their religion. However, how little do the new gen know, it was a necessity at that time as their was huge humanitarian and to some extent religious injustice going on and one never knew when he/she would be in a situation where they need to defend themselves or fight against the injustice. And so to be ready for this at any random time they were asked to be prepared as their hair would be long and thick and tied up in a turban (acting as a helmet), their beards would protect their faces to some extent, with the comb to keep the hair tidy. the bangle in those times would be this huge metal armlet / thick bracelet acting almost like a shield and protecting the wearers arms. The loose clothing enable them to move freely in combat and of course the sword to fight with. All this is not a necessity now except for if they were in a war torn country or were facing huge injustice and persecution. Apart from those serving in an army or police where is could serve use as extra protection in addition to the protection they are given anyway, no Sikh really has the need to carry out these requirements as the world is a much safer place. You don't get random persecutions any more especially in India and west where they mostly reside.

The same principle can be added to Islam and to any other religion that may have carried these necessities and requirements over as religious traditions.

because they feel...just like some christians feel...that they must dress and act a certain way to receive credit for being a muslim as if their good deeds and outer appearance will get them into "paradise"....though the truth of the matter is...no matter...christian or muslim...you cannot cover mud and stench with silk and make the mud become the silk....the mud is still there and the stink is still there....you must clean up the inside before the outside will give any credence to purity.

anyway...so what? let them be...you cannot change other people's minds or thoughts about what they believe in...only God can...but He will not force them.

even if our muslim brothers and sisters are wrong though...at least they are trying to do something right...even if they are missing the mark....christians miss the mark too....many do. trying to do what is right is better than nothing.

They like their beards? Why does it bother you?

Orthodox Jews also have beards. Why do you NOT question their beards? Are you scared of them because they will label you as ANTI-SEMETIC?

To show how dedicated they are to the faith and appear righteous and what not. Having a clean face shows that you are too concern about your appearance and you come off as decadent. Back in the olden days, only the rich could afford to maintain a clean shaven face.

In their religion they don't like to cut hair to often because it has something to with their faith. I'm not 100% why they do it. BTW the correct question would be Why do muslims have A big beard.

I don't know but some guy at the airport ask my wife if I was Saddam and I shaved it off.
I hate it at Christmas with all the parents yelling look there's Santa at their kids, but that hit home.
